It always helps if you develop a niche for yourself. It's a well known situation in this stream that Supply is much higher than demand, and yet I've only met a few Engineers who are exceptionally well. The first thing to do if you're unable to switch is find technologies and areas that compliment your experience. If you're a mechanical design engineer, try learning programming and getting into CAD Customization. If you're in Sales and Marketing, try going for a PGDM or a good certification that boosts your chances. My recommendation is not to spend bucks to get a certificate, but to really indulge and be better. Upon that, apply extensively and try to simply get in touch with people you already know, reaching out to them for opportunities.
