What do you do if you're making common mistakes in your research as a beginner in Research Skills?

Mistakes most commonly done which I am trying to put together from my phd journey are 1) Not trying to understand how a research paper should be approached for knowledge 2) reading just particular section and not developing the habbit of reading research article regularly 3) reading articles independently and not connecting their relations with the context

Understand common pitfalls: Familiarize yourself with common research mistakes like poorly defined research questions, insufficient literature review, biased sampling, unsuitable methodology, and overgeneralized conclusions and always seek feedback. Share your work with a mentor, professor, or experienced colleague for specific feedback. Be open to their insights, even if they point out flaws. Learn from the errors: Analyze the "Why". Instead of just fixing the surface issue, understand why you made the mistake. Was it due to a lack of knowledge, rushing through the process, or a misunderstanding of a theory?

I regularly review my work to identify any errors, which could be scientific, methodological or even writing errors. Careful correction of the work is essential for its consistency, quality and clarity, to positively respond to the interest of people who will read the research. I often seek the opinion of colleagues, teachers, experts, specialists and sometimes people outside the field, for example, when it comes to articles for the written press. Listening carefully to criticism is essential for the quality and evolution of research.

This is definitely the most commonly missed step of people new to research. Many students beginning their PhD most likely excelled in their undergraduate curriculum and go into graduate school assuming they know a lot already (myself included). But as you progress you quickly learn that there is so much to learn, and seeking advice and feedback from peers and mentors is the best way to learn these valuable skills. My PhD advisor would always tell me to “have a thirst for knowledge”, a great mantra for any researcher.

Getting feedback from researchers and experienced colleagues is always important, not only in recognizing our work, which increases our motivation, but can also be very valuable in evaluating and helping with information and comments that can identify common errors. I consider feedback to be an important component of my ongoing learning process.

In my research into ethics in artificial intelligence in public administration, which is innovative, at the level of academic master's and doctorate degrees there are no theses in this area. I decided to take an exploratory, descriptive approach, according to a qualitative perspective, with data collection and processing techniques that respected the grounded theory methodology, recommended by several authors for research into understudied realities. Grounded theory is based on the analysis of collected data, organized into categories (themes or concepts) using the systematic comparison method. The researcher will collect more data whenever it is necessary to delve deeper into certain aspects of the phenomenon under study.

My investigation area - AI ethics in Public Administration - is based on principles that are transversal to other social and economic areas, such as discrimination, privacy or responsibility, for example, and which the law has not yet resolved, The AIA – Community Regulation of AI, although it has already been approved, it has not yet been published. Therefore, I constantly look for new information and research to stay up to date, following published documents, webinars, news letters, online forums and following relevant periodicals and podcasts.

The quality of your research is directly proportional to the number of setbacks you face! Yes!!!! It’s true It’s simple the more you practice the more you shall develop the skill set that will work for you and the tips and tricks that fit the best for you. See, no one is coming to teach you this nor is anyone helping you when you get stuck. Practice, learn and be your own mentor

The quality of research improves with practice. I always dedicate some time to analyze new data and documents, but also to exchange views with experts in the field, university professors and other specialists. I frequently write articles about my research, published in specialized books and magazines, such as Springer: “Ethics and Development of Advanced Technology Systems in Public Administration”; "European Union fosters ethical AI in the Public Administration", and for the written press, but I have also been invited to public interventions at universities, civil society associations, always updating my research data.

Starting with a topic that's too broad can make research overwhelming. Make sure your research question is specific. Not all information online is reliable. Rely on academic databases, scholarly journals, and reputable websites for credible sources. These sources are typically peer-reviewed, meaning their content has been vetted by experts in the field. Develop a clear note-taking system that includes proper citations. This will help you stay organized and avoid plagiarism later. Unintentional plagiarism happens when you fail to properly cite your sources. Make sure to paraphrase information in your own words and cite the original source whenever you use someone else's ideas or data.

If you're a beginner in research and struggling with common mistakes, don't worry! It's a normal part of the learning process. Here are some steps you can take to improve your research skills: 1. Seek guidance.Find a mentor or supervisor who can guide you through the research process and provide feedback on your work. 2. Take online courses or tutorials.Websites like Coursera, edX, and Udemy offer courses on research methods, academic writing, and critical thinking. 3.Read research manuals and guides. 4. Practice critical thinking 5. Join a research community 6. Learn from your mistake 7. Start small 8. Use research tools and software 9. Read widely 10. Be patient and persistent

Outline your research and put it in a format. Always utilize referenced information when researching. And lastly, pick a topic you’re passionate about to focus on future research.
