What do you do if you're a late career professional wanting to make a meaningful impact through volunteering?

To make a meaningful impact generally- being passionate about what you are doing will definitely make it worthwhile. You can always perfect any skill you have, but determination should be there.

It is never too late to volunteer. There are millions of opportunities to volunteer around the world and every sector imaginable has a space for every skillset- you just have to find it. Reflecting on your career, or skills, or what you had hoped to do can all play a role, but don't pigeon hole yourself into doing whatever your career was. Volunteering should be something you're passionate about and promoting the causes you care about.

Determine what you’re passionate about being a part of. Recognize the areas in which you are strong and assess if an organization can benefit from your skills. I’d probably recommend doing a quick SWOT analysis and then hit the gas to get to volunteering.

Its important to find a cause that resonates with your driving purpose and values. The skills and experience you bring to the volunteering role has the potential to be a huge benefit in adding a different perspective to the organisation you choose - though the opportunity to learn new skills particularly in later life should not be overlooked, in the positives of improving cognitive function and self-value.

Reaching out to people who are already involved in volunteering will boost your self-awareness. When volunteering you need to be selective because some organizations can't wait to use you in the name of volunteering.

Be creative. Grow your audience by sharing more knowledge and try to give it a wider coverage, let it reaches far and get everyone involved

Starting small is really underrated. Most people wait till they have a really big opportunity when they can infact start from their local community. This helps to build personal skills and prepare you for bigger responsibilities

It's never too late to start volunteering. Many organisations have smaller sub-committes that may suit your skills and your time allowance. Then when you are sure about further commitment you could later look at getting more involved at governance level which is a bigger time commitment.

Finally, be open to evolving your role as needed based on the organization's changing needs and your skills/interests. Periodically reassessing how you can maximize your impact prevents volunteering from feeling stagnant.

When you connect to a volunteer activity with a purpose it is crucial to have forethought into how the time commitment will look for you as a professional. Engage in discussion with leadership in the organization to be sure the volunteer opportunity falls within everyone's expectations, including your own. This will foster building a foundation of commitment as you engage in this new role.

If you have taken early retirement from either poor health or family issues, volunteering is a great way to build up your self esteem and work with other professional people like yourself that still want to achieve some goals whilst doing good. Volunteering is a reason to get up in the morning and feeling like you are making a difference.

As someone that worked in non-profit for several years my recommendation is this: 1. Find a cause that you're passionate about, because it won't feel like a burden on your to-do list. 2. Assess what you can bring to the table. Are you a good event planner? Are you organized? Can you keep track of Finances? Write this down 2. Develop relationships within the organization, especially with development staff. This way you'll get to know the board if you're looking for board options- OR you'll get to know where the need is with volunteering. Not all opportunities are created equal. You want to ensure you're not just doing busy work, you're contributing.

Don't just think about the hard technical skills from your career field. Many organizations need help with "softer" skills, like mentoring, teaching, public speaking, leadership development, and more. As an experienced professional, you have a wealth of knowledge to share through roles like tutoring students, training staffers, or facilitating workshops. While the motivation may start as giving back, many volunteers find unexpected personal benefits like increased activity/health, a sense of purpose, mental stimulation, socializing, and new friends. One retiree told me volunteering at an animal shelter helped relieve her empty nest syndrome after her kids grew up.
