your portfolio doesn't need to cover everything. it doesn't have to be really fancy or cover a lot of things. it's also generally hard to showcase backend or DevOps experience or knowhow compared to frontend skills as a site or service that's well engineered "just works" and nobody gives a second thought to it or it doesn't work and people view that with a negative light. in either case, focus on a subset of skills or tools/features/libraries you may wanna highlight and focus on that. working aimlessly can easily lead to feature bloat and a codebase that gets out of hand with feature creep quickly

In my experience, when I was a junior web developer, I used to read about the technology that I was learning, and I asked other colleagues. However, this situation was sometimes limited because my coworkers were also junior web developers. So, in this regard, practicing on personal or shared projects and sharing knowledge or projects with others, whether they are developers or not, is fantastic. It's not important that you know a little bit; what's important is that your knowledge is solid! Personally, seeking mentorship is one of the hardest things to do, but also one of the most important. Especially if you are on the newer side, being able to break out of your comfort zone and make the first outreach is scary! But, if you can do it, it will accelerate your growth like no other. My advice: find someone who you think to yourself: "wow, that person is great at doing [X] skill." It doesn't necessarily have to be a technical skill. Reach out and start a conversation and see where it goes. Make a plan to meet on a regular basis. Your future self will thank you.

In my view, problem solving is not a soft skill in software engineering; it is the essence of the job itself. Algorithmic thinking, debugging, optimizating is just about solving a problem. ??

As a growing developer, the ability to communicate effectively increases exponentially. Technical concepts, by nature, are very complex. If you can effectively control the context and explain your thought process in an easy to understand manner, you will easily become a huge asset to the team. A great way to practice this skill is to pair program! One can pseudocode to the other team member and see if they can code out the solution using your thought process.

soft skills are important. I know many people often struggle with this part being shy and introverted, I am one of them. but speak up and ask questions when you are not clear on something. keep working on your questions and research until you are clear on what's required. don't be stressed out afraid about asking questions. there is no downside to it. and it's much better than misunderstanding something and having to throw away your work and start from scratch if you get things wrong.

look for GitHub accounts for any personal/portfolio websites you may come across. most stuff people do as showcase or in personal time and put on web has source published. it's not right to copy the code without correct attribution of if license terms don't allow it but looking at code is always a great way to understand how things work

Learn by trying: tackle personal projects, face problems and struggle with them rather than reading about them in an article, come up with solutions, collect feedback, improve on it. Contribute to open source projects. Learn how to write clean and maintainable code.

Learn by struggling! As an avid gamer a concept that I bring into professional growth is limit testing. Use training tools or practice environments to better your craft. Try things that you normally wouldn't in a controlled setting and then apply that to the real thing. Embrace failure knowing that it's better to fail in practice than having to learn on the fly when the real thing happens in your production environment.
