Interviews should be a meaningful conversation between a candidate and the interviewers representing your organization. Avoid uninspired, trivia style questions that only assess if candidates know what you know. Shallow questions like this lead to biased evaluations that fail to truly assess if the candidate is what the team and organization need. Focus on assessing skills and experience with scenarios and questions relevant to the actual role. Remember, candidates are evaluating you and your organization as much as you are evaluating them. Engage in thoughtful dialogue that demonstrates your company's values and the depth of the role. Ideally, every new hire should raise the bar for you, your team, and ultimately your organization.

I think Infosec is one of the areas best served by exceptional critical thinking skills. Separating signal from noise is a mix of art and science. It's knowing your product and its quirks, when it's supposed to be busy, what the normal traffic and log shape looks like. The little details are what let you tease out the threats from benign traffic. There's also a lot of room for lateral thinking with regards to mitigation. Can you stop the threat at the edge, at the load balancer, at the firewall, at the router, at the app level? At egress? What do your logs say at each point in the chain? If a candidate is thinking through an issue this way I feel really encouraged. They get it. Everything else is tooling and syntax.
