When starting in a strategy team I think it's relevant to deeply understand context and do as much research and learning on your own even before seeking for guidance. Guidance can also happen naturally by following more senior team members with a methodology that is called shadowing.

Being an intern in strategy requires an inquisitive mind. To be successful in Strategy, one must have a deep and holistic understanding of many factors. An intern does not have the experience to be effective in strategy, so they must build their skills in crucial Emotional Intelligence skills to quickly close the gap from being a liability to an asset. Key skills include perspective-taking, active listening, collaboration, compassion, effective confrontation, insightfulness, and situational awareness. Build your EQ skills, and you will move to an asset faster.

Part of understanding basics are product (or service) knowledge, interest on sector trends and reading on upcoming challenges. If academic learning did not cover all the basics make sure to go back and look at theoretical knowledge That is available for that company function and sector more in general.
