What do you do if you're an intern in a CSR role and want to explore various sustainability aspects?

In my experience, Start by learning about the principles and practices of CSR. Familiarize yourself with key concepts, frameworks, and best practices in areas such as environmental sustainability, social impact, and ethical business practices. ain a thorough understanding of your organization's CSR strategy, goals, and initiatives. Review any existing sustainability reports, policies, and documentation to understand the company's approach to sustainability and areas of focus. ake the initiative to engage with various stakeholders within and outside the organization who are involved in CSR and sustainability efforts. This could include CSR managers, sustainability professionals, cross-functional teams, and community partners.

Research: Start by researching different aspects of sustainability, such as environmental sustainability, social responsibility & economic sustainability. Understand the key concepts, challenges, and best practices in each area. Network: Reach out to colleagues within your organization who work on sustainability initiatives. Ask them about their work, challenges they face, and any opportunities for involvement or collaboration. Seek Mentorship: Look for a mentor within your organization who is knowledgeable about sustainability. They can provide guidance, advice, and support as you explore different aspects of sustainability.

A good place to start is the 'Guiding Principles and Frameworks' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Companies voluntarily integrate social and environmental concerns into their business operations. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG): A holistic approach that evaluates a company’s performance in these three areas. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): United Nations’ global goals addressing poverty, inequality, climate change, and more. Circular Economy: Promoting resource efficiency and minimizing waste. Greenwashing: Beware of misleading claims about environmental friendliness. Stakeholder Engagement: Involving employees, communities, and investors in sustainability efforts.

For example, if you're particularly interested in promoting social equity, you might explore initiatives within your organization aimed at diversity and inclusion. You could seek opportunities to support programs that focus on hiring practices, employee resource groups, or community partnerships that address social justice issues.

Based on my opinion, it's always good to ask for feedback on your ideas and initiatives, and be open to constructive criticism to help refine your approach. Your mentors can provide valuable insights into the organization's sustainability priorities and suggest relevant projects or activities for you to explore. Additionally, they can offer advice on how to navigate challenges and make the most of your internship experience.

Be clear in the interview process. If you have a goal of certain outcomes from your internship, share that openly. Otherwise, projects may be outlined prior to your arrival and there may not be room to explore outside of those tasks. Feel encouraged to be clear and share your excitement around all of the various opportunities a company provides. This is likely to be well received.
