What do you do if you're feeling overwhelmed and struggling to meet deadlines in a creative field?

I prefer to use project management tasks like Asana or Notion to prioritize all of my looming deadlines. Once I have them all listed in the platform I can organize them, group tasks together, and see what order would be most effective. Another method I use when overwhelmed is the Eisenhower Matrix. Ultimately, you organize tasks into four quadrants: Do first, Schedule, Delegate, and Don't do.

(spoiler: you never get all 3) Example: If Cheap (budget) and Fast (timeline) can't change, focus your recommendation on how to reduce the team's effort (sacrifice a little quality).

Seeking support is critical during projects that seem overwhelming or out of control. I would always recommend sharing issues with a team lead or supervisor as early as possible. A lot of issues can be remedied early and stress eliminated when good leaders are given the opportunity to lead the project and the people. For this reason, I suggest seeking support regularly and not just in times of crisis. It is okay to check in and let a leader know when you see a potential challenge ahead. If your team lead or supervisor is not helpful, I suggest reaching out to coworkers or others who do similar work. Peer-to-peer strategy sessions could go a long way to alleviate stress and help formulate an actionable plan.

With most companies allowing employees to work from home for half their time, I find that taking a walk and getting some fresh air without any distractions allows you to detach from the constant pings, emails, and conference calls. Fresh air helps promote the production of serotonin which improves happiness levels and reduces anxiety.

Often the creative tasks have many components and it helps to separate those into categories. For example, a presentation has copy, visuals, charts, and content information. Setting a folder, Word doc, or Google doc with everything needed is an administrative task that is super beneficial, especially when deadlines are tight. Now that you have assembled all the components in one place - your presentation layout or template, your images (stock or brand), videos, and copy you plug the information into the template. Having it all in one place also makes changes easier. I have found the pre-work done before starting reduces stress overall, but especially under tight deadlines.
