What do you do if you're facing a layoff but still want to stay current in User Experience Design (UED)?

I encourage you to take a deep breath and embrace your learning journey, surpassing your past achievements even in the face of adversity like a layoff. Continuously polish your portfolio and take time to reflect on the circumstances leading to the layoff, identifying areas for personal growth. Approach future opportunities with renewed determination, knowing that you contributed positively to your previous company. Be proud of your past accomplishments and commit to doing your absolute best in all your future endeavors.

I think the hardest part of going through this experience is questioning yourself and trying to understand why this situation is happening. We need to realize that most of these cases are simply a result of poor decisions and policies within the company, leading to job cuts. If I were in this situation, I would mainly try to understand that it might not be my fault to find myself in such a moment. I would take a couple of days to process everything and focus on updating my portfolio to be ready to apply for other jobs as soon as possible! Keeping our portfolios updated is not easy for active designers, especially with the new design trends. So, I believe this is crucial to keep growing and accessing new opportunities in the industry!

The time when there was a long gap in finding a job for me, I drifted towards online design groups, communities, events and even offline networking events. I would consider it to be the best decision when it comes to creating a better stance in my domain. I got to learn so much more, found the skills I’m good at, created some real cool connections as well as some real interesting conversations stroke amazing conversations which were worth the time and efforts!

I think volunteering helps in this tough period cause you will be able to catch up with your skills and learn things when you are exposed to different projects. So you will not be missed out on learning things as well as catching up with the trends in the industry. Volunteering works two ways. You can learn new things while contributing something usable which helps people.

In my experience, volunteering not only contributes to societal good but also hones your UED expertise. Also selecting volunteer projects that challenge your design perspective.

If you are seriously considering volunteering, explore opportunities that you may always have wanted to be involved with but never actually considered. I did and now I have connections that I would never have had otherwise. The competition is thin for volunteers which if that card is played well, a new world of opportunities can open up to you and eventually after proving your worth great earning potential too.

Apart from UED skills develop enterprise analysis skills to know when the company is doing good or bad and move out without taking a hit. 3. Develop network within firm with finance and sales team to know whats happening in the firm and hows the customer pipe line is for the firm and prepapre yourself accordingly. 4. develop a secondary income like shares trading and earn enough to sustain for couple of months post layoff so that they money angle is taken care. 5. Now that if there is a layoff, you have more time on hand so take a step back and unwind, reassess why you are on the layoff lane and what stratgic plan you should have to make you immune to this in future.
