Making it easier to transition to #NetZero ???? Our Group CEO Chris O'Shea has welcomed today's announcement by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of a range of measures that will make owning a heat pump easier. Heat Pumps are already playing an integral role in decarbonising home heating, and these changes should speed up the transition. Taking a whole-systems approach to Net Zero ?? To meet the Government’s goal of becoming a clean energy superpower, the UK requires a system-wide approach. Today, we're publishing a new report, alongside FTI Consulting, which confirms the vital role that hydrogen must play in delivering a secure, decarbonised electricity system. The key findings are: ? Hydrogen unlocks the full benefit of renewable electricity generation and minimises the electrical infrastructure required to deliver net zero. ?? Different types of hydrogen storage can work together to increase resilience & cost-efficiency. ?? Creating an inclusive and unbiased future ? We've launched our 'Breaking Down Barriers to Opportunity and Equality' report in collaboration with The Purpose Coalition. At the Westminster launch our Chief Customer Officer Gary Booker highlighted some of the key areas of the report such as the valuable contribution of the British Gas Energy Trust, the importance of our Rough field as a future hydrogen store for the UK, and how Energy for Tomorrow (EfT) is supporting community initiatives across the UK. Sandra Dyball, Director of Health and Wellbeing spoke about the importance of colleague schemes such as the Pathway to Parenthood in creating a workplace where everybody can thrive. We were joined by Matt Vickers MP and Rt Hon. Justine Greening, Founder of The Purpose Coalition, to discuss the transition to #NetZero and the importance of ensuring no one is left behind. We've had a busy day at the Hydrogen for Life conference at the Oval in London. Here's our Hy-five from the event ?? 1) Minister for Industry Sarah Jones MP popped by to see the hydrogen powered Vauxhall Motors Ltd van we will soon be trialling within British Gas. ?? 2) Our Head of Hydrogen William Mezzullo took part in a panel debate on the importance of a whole system approach to decarbonising UK energy. ?? 3) We introduced Matthew Gordon of the All Party Parliamentary Group on energy and former MP Ian Liddell-Grainger to our plans alongside SSE plc and Equinor for a hydrogen hub in the Humber. ?? 4) It was great to have so many conversations recognising the importance of our #Rough field as part of the solution to long duration energy storage. ?? 5) Alongside Bosch and Ceres we launched a whitepaper titled 'The role of hydrogen in decarbonising UK power generation'. The?acquisition?will enable Bord Gáis Energy to deliver 10,000 solar installations over the next five years, helping customers save up to 70% on their electricity bills. The Irish Government’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) is targeting 8 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030 and residential, business and agri solar will play a key role in delivering on those targets. Securing a sustainable energy future ?? Great to host ITV News for a behind the scenes tour of our Rough gas storage facility and Easington terminal. Our long-term ambition is to turn Rough into the world's largest long duration low carbon energy storage facility, capable of storing both natural gas and hydrogen. Rough, which is 18 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire, now provides half of the UK’s total gas storage, playing a critical role in UK energy security. With the support of Energy for Tomorrow (EfT), the NCRC at Trafford Hall has been able to launch the ‘Shaping Sustainable Futures’ programme, aiming to give young people an introduction to the green sector. The programme helps them to develop a range of skills and learn about employment opportunities within the energy sector, whilst supporting the NCRC’s move toward #NetZero. Getting bus(y) charging?? We’ve signed an innovative EV charging partnership with First Bus which will see our fleet of EV vans given access to First Bus’ rapid charging infrastructure at bus depots nationwide. Starting with a trial at the company’s Leicester depot, the partnership was launched by Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood MP, who joined representatives from First Bus and Centrica to highlight the critical role the EV infrastructure will play in reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transport. While buses are out on the road during the day, the infrastructure will be used by British Gas vans to charge quickly and conveniently, allowing engineers to spend more time helping customers.
