Leading in today's complex world and workplaces is not easy. Executives are facing unprecedented challenges and an accelerated pace of change. It is so important for leaders to have mentors who can guide them and share their own learnings/insights from experience. Having a mentor in your corner can create stability and a trusted sounding board + guidance on how to navigate. It is also critical that leaders have a peer network, an emotionally safe space to connect and learn from other leaders + share challenges with a peer group. And it is paramount to design a personal "board of directors." Who are your go to people when you need advice, a safe space to talk, and a cheerleader in your corner?

Every good leader has a mentor. Maybe they've not formalised it but they will be speaking to someone who they respect when they're needing it. Its essential.

Having a trusted mentor is absolutely crucial as an executive leader. Of the myriad of challenges you will face, many will be situations or issues you have no past experience with. In addition to this, some situations will involve complexity, uncertainty and a range of emotions which can be challenging and sometimes confronting to navigate. Having a guide on the side to act as a confidante, a sounding board and a source of wisdom and advice is quite simply essential.

Self-awareness and reflection is essential. If you want to lead, inspire and motivate others, you need to understand yourself first.

This one is super important. As an executive leader, you need to be honest with yourself and acknowledge you are not an expert in all things and will not have all the answers. You need to always be open and curious about the things you don't know and engage in ongoing learning and professional development to expand your skills, knowledge and expertise. This will help ensure your continued growth as a leader and will help model to your team and your wider professional community the importance and value of openness, curiosity and learning as a source of continuous improvement.

Throwing a spanner in the works here but learning is key if there is a knowledge gap. However, it needs to be established why executives are struggling. It may NOT be a performance or learning issue. This is where an external coach who is impartial would work best.

Knowing how you respond to setbacks is key to recognising behaviour. This eliminates any chance of reacting rather than responding. Self Awareness is crucial to navigating leadership, but knowing how others work too a a collaborative team helps to eliminate the need for 'bouncing back'

As a good leader you need to consider everything as a challenge. Things will go wrong, even things that worked before and you will always be challenged. This is part of the continual improvement process that builds, knowledge, experience and resilience.

- View setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning rather than failures. - Share stories with your team about times when you faced adversity and emerged stronger. - For example, if a project doesn't yield the expected results, use it as a chance to analyze what went wrong and how to improve in the future.

I contribute here by mentioning other ways to gain team involvement: a. Promote transparency and open communication by regularly sharing information about the company's direction, challenges and successes. b. Encourage professional development by offering learning and growth opportunities that are aligned with individual and organizational goals. c. Establish an inclusive and collaborative work environment, where everyone's ideas are valued and respected, regardless of position or experience.

You are only as good as your team - never forget it. When they fail, you first need to ask yourself, did I provide enough support, information, guidance etc. This is how you get better and gain a better understanding of your team members.

One of the areas I’ve been working on with Execs is how to create your leadership narrative: Where are you going as org/business/dept/team? Why is that important? Where have we come from and where are we now? What is the opportunity we have? How can people be part of this? What happens next? I think we need to be able to create a story that engages people beyond talking about KPIs/Goals etc and get really good at ‘storytelling’.

Self-reflection is essential for improved self-awareness. You need to understand yourself, before you can inspire, motivate and lead others well.

Practising regular personal and professional reflection is an essential habit for any leader. The insight that can be gained is what will drive your continued growth. It takes courage to take an honest look back, but we cannot evolve and become better as leaders, and as humans, if we are not open to unpacking and sifting through our successes as well as also our failures.

Self-Reflection: Take time for self-reflection to understand your strengths, weaknesses, values, and leadership style. This self-awareness can guide your decision-making and interactions with others.

In today's organisational landscape where uncertainty and change are constants, the ability to adjust to rapidly changing circumstances is an essential skill for leaders. This takes stamina and an ability to think and plan 5 steps ahead so you have inbuilt contingency plans to ensure you can pivot and readjust on the fly if and when needed. Leveraging the strength and expertise of your team is key here, not only to tap into their ideas in the forward planning space but also to ensure their buy in and commitment if agility and rapid response is needed.
