My first mentor was one I shouldn't have had. He was (and still is ) a highly paid business advisor, coach and mentor to senior executives and I was a 20-something aspiring entrepreneur. My naiveté was my advantage. I approached him and told him the truth - you're someone I admire. Can I please buy you a coffee and ask you three questions? He agreed and I planned my questions carefully. I wanted them to be expensive and useful so that I would get value and - importantly to me- he wouldn't see me as a dumb kid. I've found that people want to help. They're keen to offer assistance, as long as it's asked for in a tactful, authentic way.

Also to add on top of that - there are few basics I.e Knowledge about the Organization, it's painpoints, vision and mission and aligning your functions towards that and most importantly Decision making (how swiftly/promptly you're able to take decisions and back them with facts & figures and take accountability) Few other attributes would be thoughtfulness/ thought leadership, proactive approach, attention/detail oriented, Far sightedness, Prompt Risk identification and mitigation of risks/problems, Problem solving! Above all these, effective communication & attitude towards a problem, function, people are some key strengths to hone to become an Effective Leader!

As a mentor (the best part of my role without any doubt - helping sales people become great sales leaders is hugely rewarding for all parties) people usually find me through referral and word of mouth. If I was looking for a mentor, I would think about my goal, and ask my most trusted friends and colleagues for recommendations and introductions to inspiring potential mentors they think could help me to accomplish that goal.
