What do you do if you're deciding on film production locations?

Knowing the demands of the script and the visual style required to tell the story will help you choose the ideal settings for a movie. Look into several places that meet these requirements, taking into account things like logistical convenience, local laws, and any disruptions. Budgetary concerns are quite important; these include local crew expenses, transport, and permission fees. To locate the best locations, use site scouting firms or collaborate with regional film commissions. Maintain a backup plan in case anything unexpected happens. Examine possible locations in person to determine their acceptability, and speak with your director and cinematographer to make sure the settings complement the artistic concept.

As others have pointed out, location discussions come out of the script breakdown. It's at this point, the producer (s), director, and director of photography and possibly the assistant director and art director will discuss the implications of choosing the ideal locations that fit the script tonally and artistically. After that, the exercise of determining the next best options begin, as budget, time constraints, availability, etc. begin narrowing your choices.

How much you have of either will determine your potential locations. Time because you'll eat up a lot of it in the permitting and negotiation process (and again on the day). Money because, well, unless you're a micro-budget project, you'll likely have to pay something. Be smart in your choices and find places that work not only for the scenes set there, but may work for another location nearby as well.

I prefer to get everybody on a call, but this is hard to schedule. Utilizing crews that often work together, and inviting junior crew members to the call, will help immensely.

I have a friend who works for a large Real Estate firm in New York. She handles the rentals available for movie shoots in New York and sells real estate. She has connections in the same business all over the world. She can get the permit requirements and make the connections. Discounts are often available and she knows whom to contact if you give her a description of what you're looking for and the location, ie: a deserted warehouse in Nebraska, a hospital emergency room in Alaska, etc. Many real estate agents have access to unique locations for film shoots. It's who you know!

Conducting a recce, or location scout, is indispensable before finalizing film production locations. Visit potential sites to assess space, lighting, and suitability for the story. Document observations through photographs and consider necessary alterations. This firsthand evaluation ensures alignment between location reality and production demands, facilitating informed decision-making.

When doing a recce, consider the quality of sound you are going to get. Are there many planes going over? Are there loads of noisy roads? Is it a very busy place? Ideally, you want to bring the sound recordist with you but if you can't, make sure to take notes and talk to them about potential issues.

One thing that often gets overlooked is sound I think a good producer should have a sound mixer on location scouts. Is the scouted location in a flight path? Near a freeway? Next to a train track? If you are interior on a practical set are there things that might interfere? Are there noisy neighbors? An industrial refrigerator? An air conditioner that goes on and off? What controls do you have? Sound is such an important element and it is easy to forget how much time and money gets spent fixing sound issues that could have been prevented in the first place.

Don't forget the impact that insurance requirements might have on small productions. Everything may line up budget wise in terms of location rental fees, but depending on what you're shooting, what your bringing into to space, and what's in the space (historical architecture, valuable art installation, etc.) a location may have additional requirements above the typical million plus dollars in liability coverage.
