What do you do if you're a Construction Management graduate trying to shine in a cutthroat job market?

Take a purposeful yet humble approach in building your "portfolio" of experience. Your value will increase with every real world lesson, but it doesn't happen in a day, a week or even a year. Because of that, be selective in where you choose to build your career & immerse yourself into a team with aligned values. You'll be happier & ultimately better rewarded.

Show up. Listen. Do what it takes. Be proactive. Be curious. Ask a lot of questions. Have a strong work ethic. Work the hours your crews work. Provide value. Sounds simple but there's remarkably little people doing that now. Everyone wants to punch the 9-5 clock. Work from their office. Not drive anywhere. Sleep in. You don't have do perform miracles. Just do the things others are not doing. Do the things others are doing but better/more. If you put the job first, the job will quickly put you first. That credibility and trusts is earned.

Keep a Photo Record of your Projects .Learn to take a good clear wide angle Photo that says 1000 words The Biggest contributor to your success is Are you a money Maker?. The Private sector does not want Mr Nice Guy. They want Mr Make Profit . To do this you need to be a leader, Innovative , Manage People and be fast. Dont overcomplicate things . Every challenge has a simple solution. Never Trust information and Data presented . Much of it has been fudged. Know your Contract. Know your Contract . Get the message

Having a Growth Mindset is they key. 1. Read, Read, and Read: I am not referring here to theoretical books, but rather to contractual agreements, subcontractor agreements, invoices, change orders, specifications, drawings, construction schedules, payment applications, estimates, etc. 2. Spend as much time as possible on a construction site, be curious and ask as many questions as you can. 3. Finally, be patient.

The most important advice for any students, get on-site experience & ask questions. If you've had site experience you will naturally be a step ahead of those without. The best thing I ever did was decline an office position for my gap year, and spend a year on-site, early morning, changeable weather, long hours, but brilliant experience.

Put work into making sure your coworkers, vendors and contractors see you as a trustworthy partner. Don't play games, avoid politics, stay positive, do your job and help those around you when you can. Its a small industry, the project manager you went above beyond to help shine today, might be the one interviewing you for a job tomorrow.

Over the last 18 years of professional life, I have realized that concepts learnt in the classroom provide just the starting point of your career growth. What makes for a good professional is how attuned you are to what is happening on the field and in the industry. Apart from actual field experience which has close to no substitute, the next best thing for a fresh graduate is to network with fellow professionals and feel the pulse. This can be done by attending workshops & conferences, Profesional memberships, online platforms and through plain old fashioned conversations. Keep accumulating knowledge, it never goes waste.

I deeply believe in the mantra "Your network is your net worth" No matter where you start in life, it is important to have people by your side who can help you along the way. As a piece of advice, I suggest new graduates to connect with professionals on LinkedIn and attending industry events, seminars and conferences as much as possible and don't be a no-sayer. A simple LinkedIn search will open gates for you to connect with your alumni. Secondly, there are plenty of Construction management groups on LinkedIn, make sure you join them and engage with the members there. All it takes is one connection, one YES, to land you a job and begin your career. Don't be too shy or afraid to ask someone for help, we all begin somewhere!

Realize that absolutely nothing beats experience and a great attitude. Far too many come from college arrogant, unteachable (in what will matter on the job), and an unwillingness to acknowledge it. That superintendent on the job who makes things run smooth, and earns more than a lot of other people? You could learn more from him in 6 months than your entire 4+ years - IF you are humble. Be willing to learn, pursue experience for all you're worth, (field experience - something you likely have NONE of), and bring a great disposition. Humility and a great attitude will take you much further than your education.

Networking with professionals may open access to hidden opportunities by referrals and recommendations. We can learn from others experiences and get insider information in advance. Professional networking will stay us updated on industrial trends, support and encouragement may boost morale for job hunters.

Take your education and spend real time in the field, learn the names of our highly skilled and our lower skilled workers, learn to build, watch and take notes on cycle times for each trade ask real questions and remember these answers. Then you will truly bring value to our industry, our teams and our clients.

Continuously update your skills by taking online courses, reading industry blogs, listening to podcasts, and attending webinars. Earning certifications like PMP, CCM, or LEED Green Associate from reputable organizations can also enhance your credibility and expertise. Engaging in these learning opportunities will keep you informed about the latest trends, technologies, and best practices, making you a more valuable candidate in the job market.

Initially, it is most important for me to gain work experience in actual field only. Secondly, i should learn more about construction management implementation techniques, rules, laws, codes, HSE laws etc. After enough experience of field, then it is also important to become part or member of international organization to have regular updates. Then work for PMP, CCM, LEED Associate kind of certifications.

Yes, customization of the resume is important. Make sure your relevant talents are reflected on your resume that the position requires.

Construction Management is a very diverse industry and you have to be very specific about your expertise. If you are an expert in the construction of small houses, you will find it quite difficult to adjust yourself in the highway construction industry.

We like to see resumes rich in content, but not with too many filler words or sentences. One thing young construction managers or young graduates can do is to always take the hardest projects nobody else wants and lead the projects that aren’t fun. GPA shows you take pride in learning, but your experience and willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed means the most to me.

In essence, show through action that you took the time to showcase your abilities that are relevant to them. This will highlight your attention to detail and keep their eyes on your resume for longer.

In Ireland I don't believe I would define the graduate job market as cut throat (defined in question). One piece of advice I would give is to come across as enthusiastic. Show you are keen to learn and develop and take your skills learnt from university onto site, attitude is key. I would also suggest learning about the company you are going to interview with. It shows you have put in some effort and are genuine about looking for a job in the organisation.

Be the truest and most sincere version of your self. Recruiters are trained to detect gaslighters. If you don't know something, admit it but accept that you're up for a challenge. Part of the hiring process is convincing people they would want to work with you. Being a nice, honest person isn't a substitute for experience, but it can be the difference maker if the other candidates being interviewed have a similar resume to yours.

I found it very helpful to perform extensive research on the organization and possibly the project and the Team you would be working with.

By being prepared and confident, you'll shine!

I got my CM degree years ago and was fortunate to grow up in Commercial Construction in Denver. I agree with all points as they are great points, but my additional advice might not be the most popular, but it will allow for better decision making in the future. Try to find a company that will let you spend a year or two doing hands on/in the field work to really learn each job. With the promise of future promotion to run the jobs, estimate etc. College gives you book smarts but working in the trenches adds the valuable real world experience that allows you to confidently make decisions and be able to view each project with the end in mind. Plus you’ll sleep better at night.

The premise of this whole article is questionable... the industry isn't cutthroat by default, and it's usually players who approach it as though it were cutthroat who bring on their own misfortune. Be honest, be consistent, be accountable, be firm. The industry is small, and everyone remembers bad faith actors.

Construction industry is the oldest industry and to reach good heights in this industry skills required are listening, patience , emotional intelligence, how and when to talk. With whom you are talking also matters. Many experienced people you face in this industry from foreman to highest level and the person who want to be successful must learn how to respect their experience and their expertise. This will give huge scope to learn many practical things in the industry which is not available in the books. Egoistic mindsets will not work. These skills are most important apart from the technical skills/qualifications to be successful

Gain practical experience: Look for internships, co-op programs, or entry-level positions in construction firms. All these mentioned technologies at best they are just things which are at the top of the pyramid. They don't represent the pyramid as a whole. As the saying goes "Stick to the basics" if a fresh graduate is someone who is strong with basic construction concepts. They will be able to shine no matter what. These technologies are just there to help you in the later stages. Lets say someone is good at planning tool, what is the use of this mentioned knowledge of he doesnt even know the basic sequence of construction activities. What if he doesn't know what they call Wild air, Dry wall& Wet wall. So from my perspective sticking to the basics is way more important and these technologies are just added benefits.
