What do you do if you're considering a career change after a layoff in Higher Education?

In career advising for MBA students, we see a lot of career changers and strongly encourage focusing on transferable skills. A deep self-analysis, aided by outside opinions to overcome imposter syndrome/modesty-bias, usually highlights some incredibly valuable such skills. Taking personality and assessment tests can also uncover skills you didn't realize you had. Once you know what you're good at, you're ready to make the crucial decision to deep-dive into expertise or broaden with complementary skills... whichever serves your personal and professional development best!

After a deal self-assessment of your skills and achievements, I typically recommend a deep look at at least 2 dozen job descriptions for positions you'd like to apply for. See what skills are most prominent and both highlight and upskill in those areas... and then feature them prominently in your resume. At the same time, it's key to frame your workplace experiences in an 'achievement' mindset, not a 'responsibilities' one. Go beyond simply stating your duties, but highlight specific actions taken and results earned. Offering that proof of skills tells a recruiter or leader that not only did you do a job, but you did it well, and entices them to want to learn more about you.

Networking is proven to be the single most effective means of securing a position, period. Investigate options and hold as many informational interviews as possible; yes, it's a long game and will take time, but impressing with smart conversations and showing your passion goes a lot further than a 'spray and pray' approach to applying to jobs. Learning new skill is most effective way to yide over difficult transition phase where you remain busy in acquiring new skill while you wait for the right opportunity. It keeps you gainfully occupied and highly productive . Its a highly recommended investment plan
