What do you do if you're a computer engineer considering a late career transition into teaching or academia?

All UK higher education providers recognise the importance of bringing students into direct contact with industry professionals and current practices. It’s one of the ways in which the curriculum is brought to life. Contact an institution near you and ask about the possibility of offering a guest lecture or an Industry Q&A. That gives you a low risk opportunity to test the waters and how you feel about the experience. Most places will be thrilled that you’ve come forward. University websites can be challenging to navigate so try looking for the Programme or Course Leader, even the Dean. They can forward the offer to the right person.

Before transitioning from computer engineering to academia, evaluate your skills. Assess your ability to communicate complex ideas, drawing on any experience in mentorship or presentations. Enhance teaching skills through guest lectures or online content creation. Also, review your research capabilities, crucial for publishing and securing grants in academic roles. Consider additional qualifications like a Ph.D. and/or a teaching certification based on your target teaching level.

If you're aiming for a higher audience then a youtube channel or working as an online tutor for an organisation would be more beneficial and interesting. - A niche and clear idea is needed when it comes to creating a course or multiple tutorials in the industry.

If there is a secondary school near you, community college or 4-year institution, make an appointment with a department head associated with computer science or engineering to explore options there. Starting as an adjunct can be an excellent way to gauge whether this is a direction you want to pursue.

Start lecturing and publishing in academic forums, and get that PhD, EdD or JD if you don't have it already if you are thinking of college teaching.

Believe it or not, the credentials needed to teach high school may be significantly higher than that for secondary. Teacher education requirements for K-12 differ depending upon the state. A visit with someone at the local high school may help you there. For secondary, typically a masters is required but some locations waive the masters for years of work experience.

If teaching is your passion, you have a lot to bring into education with your computing background. There is joy in seeing a student achieve the best they can.

Asses your skills. Make sure you know ins and outs of the course you are planning to take. Network with fellow educators on the course you are planning to teach. Papers, have some good amount of Research Papers, Conference Papers, Journals published. For recent grads, Most of the Academia(Graduate and UG) do require PhD, so consider pursuing one. If you have the curiosity to share knowledge in the domain you are working without expecting much in return, Asses, Analyze and Teach.

Our adjuncts are often surprised at how long it takes to prepare for a 1-hour class, especially the first time you teach. Don't expect you can walk into the room and wing it, no matter how much you know.

It’s important to prepare for your new job . Especially since one is starting out new. What pedagogical approach is best for your teaching environment and also one needs to understand how the curriculum works. Remember your focus is your students as such everything must be done to ensure that you understand your students and come up with learning outcomes objectives

I found it useful to study for a PGCE in Further, Adult and Higher Education. I found this to be invaluable to get me started on the basics of how learning happens and how to assess learning.

It is always said that research and teaching go hand in hand but not every faculty believes in that and even fewer understand what it means. To be able to teach effectively, you need to know the state of the art which translates to doing research. However, you do not want to lose sight of your responsibility as a teacher. Some researchers feel that teaching is a nuisance which is fine if you are working in a research lab. However, in academia, our role as a researcher is not only to stay up to date through our research but also to inspire new researchers who are sitting in your classroom. Most undergraduate students are terrified when they hear the word "research", it is the teacher's job to inspire them and spark their inquisitive mind.

Make sure you mortgage is paid off and you have enough savings to get you through the first few years! (The question was raised when I was interviewed for my present job - how would I cope with the dramatic reduction in salary. I liked the honesty!) We do this for the love of teaching not for the financial rewards and while there are many frustrations I can't think of an ultimately more rewarding career.

Self evaluation is the key.... As the concepts and the topics are changing at exponential rates... being an educator is very different and challenging.. We have to look into the topics and be ready to study more and teach more.. if you are not a recent graduate then the task is not a smooth road..

Look for opportunities of Action Research, combining academics with going out into industry to help you keep updated with current practice. As a lecturer I am often out working within my sector of expertise and bringing back the knowledge and skills I glean to share with my students. I also contribute at conferences nationally and internationally which enables me to network with others and form connections, as aresult I have been able to plan trips with students to enrich their learning experiences. Research can be a real pleasure if you choose a topic you are passionate about and will enrich the lives of many as well as developing your own teaching practice.
