I would have to say, know your network. Even though there might be a network map, go make your own. Then check it against what is already done to see what you found that may not be documented and to see what you missed. Secondly, make sure you verify backups are recent and can actually be used to restore a machine. Use Cisco Packet Tracer to test new configurations before taking them live. Finally sandbox to test new software, patches, and updates before deploying them.

Practice in lab… extensive practice will give great confidence to implement things. Also very important to spend time to understand network.
