Your first IT job likely won’t be your last. Be curious and focus on the long game. Being open to different opportunities is a wonderful way to see what makes you jazzed or bores you to death. Whatever you do, be sure you are driving your career. I’ve seen those that run the clock and just are in it for a paycheck vs those that keep learning and growing and lasting fulfillment comes from the latter approach.

I would say it depends on your mindset. If you know what interests you, seek training in that subject. Work toward a cert to show that you have put in the effort. Tell your boss! Your boss should be your biggest advocate, and should seek out opportunities for you to grow in the direction you wish to. If you don't really know what is out there, but you would like to experiment, a home lab is a huge asset. I set up a Windows domain for all of the machines in my house. My boss provided me with SBS 2008 R2 allowing me to create a web server and Exchange server, and I managed every aspect of email for my family, just so I could learn how.
