What do you do if you're asked about your proficiency in programming languages during an interview?

I would honestly rate my proficiency level and experience with different technologies. I will also convey that I am open to learn any new concept and technology

I agree with the "honesty first" approach. Don't mislead the interviewer, because it can backfire. I would add, that this is one of the interview goals, so turn the table and invite the interviewer to ask you more concrete questions about the language, so she/he can judge you based on your responses to these questions.

Show passion for coding, honesty about proficiency, and understanding of OOPs concepts like encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. Share experience with design patterns like Singleton, Factory, and Repository, and how they improve code maintainability. Discuss familiarity with Dependency Injection and automated testing using frameworks like JUnit, PyUnit, or NUnit. Highlight experience with tools like CodePilot and enthusiasm for learning new languages and technologies, demonstrating adaptability and a growth mindset.

Often I have seen during interviews that candidates are not able to substantiate their theoretical knowledge in real-world practical scenarios. Which as an interviewer is a major red flag as we are hiring candidates to solve problems. Giving examples helps an interviewer to understand the candidate's thought process and clarity of concepts.

- This is a most important skill in which you can differentiate yourself. To be able to talk technically in an abstract way without resorting to give code examples is very important. In my opinion the most important skills to convey here is your critical thinking and how you approached your problems.

Using examples is an opportunity to shine. As an interviewer, I'm interested in skill, but ultimately I want to know if a candidate can develop and get things done. Talking about examples gives you room to share - what was achieved for your company or client, - what went well or not, - and what you learned from that.

I provide specific examples showing the advanced techniques I have used balanced with the awareness of other options or capabilities that I’m aware of bit don’t have direct experience with.

Always remember to be market ready you need to solve atleast one problem end to end. Not only sharing the project you need to know the metrics the action and challenges faced in the solution how did you solve the issue. Knowing the programming language and Business problem knowing both would make you the best in the market.

I believe it's best to avoid sharing skill levels, as they can be misleading and lead to a poor interview experience for both parties. Instead, focus on showcasing skills you're genuinely confident in. Be honest with yourself: if you've only used Python for simple scripting and struggle to write basic code, don't claim proficiency. I've interviewed numerous candidates who exaggerated their Python skills, only to struggle with simple tasks like writing a loop. Be authentic and accurate in your self-assessment to avoid disappointment and miscommunication.

Resume should be always precise and short. It is always better to define standards in the beginning. Explain your core skills to set the template correctly during the interview.

Do not try to add too much data in your CV and do not mention everything that you've worked on or familiar with, they will pop up later in case needed. Try to summarize your skills in a way that interviewer could get a vision about you capabilities and dive into details when the topic is open.

I definitely explain that my coding experience is broad (assembly, C/C++ for drivers, embedded, and model building, C#, Java, and Python) but not deep. I explain that I understand programming concepts, but I am definitely not as fast as a professional programmer who has mastered a language from top to bottom.

Individual must have learning attitude .one must have knowledge of basic syntax and logical ability. Rest of the things can be learn or copied from internet only. This is all about Skill vs Will. If you have will of learning , skills can be developed easily.

Knowing the syntax and logic of a programming language is not enough to be proficient in it; one must also be able to solve problems, produce short, understandable code, and use relevant frameworks and tools. Show that you understand the concepts behind OOPs, have a genuine love for programming, and are honest about your level of experience. Demonstrate that you are conversant in the language's fundamental rules and conventions?and can use them in various contexts and difficulties. Additionally, you can rapidly identify flaws and problems in other people's written code and modify it as needed. I think your critical thinking and problem-solving skills are the most important things to convey here.

You should emphasize your current strengths while expressing a keen interest in continuous learning and improvement. You should highlight your experience with technical languages and also mention your ongoing efforts to expand your skills, such as learning further tech stake, tools, and technology. This approach shows your dedication to staying current and adaptable in the ever-evolving field of technology.

Show your thought process. If you're not sure how a specific thing is done in Java, try to reason how you do it in Python, or how you would arrive at conclusions in real-world work. You can ask your interviewer "how would you have solved this, can you point out how I can better"? If they are ready to discuss, it changes the dynamics of the conversation from a wrong answer to a discussion in which you want to learn and improve.

In today's world technical skills can be copied from Google or chatgpt but an individual thought process or approach towards problem solving can't be copied. Individuals should always try to show it. If a person does not answer correctly also, should always attempt to show his or her thought process.

I disagree with talking about goals, instead I will go with examples from past that shows your eagerness to learn new skills.

In addition to sharing these goals, you could give examples of past cases where you were presented with a problem and a technology/language you were unfamiliar and how you overcame that. That will show extra confidence that you will be able to reach these goals in the future.

You can talk about your future career goals, but I think something that can help a lot is what you are doing today to reach those goals. Mention what information channels you subscribe to, what courses you are taking, how you are approaching those technologies. Even if you are not yet an expert (because maybe that is your goal) in that technology or field of your interest, mentioning the basic concepts and the context of its application will show a real interest.

No goal no progress. Goal must be clear definite divided with small goal to reach the main goal. Think like have to climb to 4th floor so 1st floor --> 2nd floor --> 3rd floor --> 4th floor

It's crucial to read blogs and consume content from leading experts in each programming language, as they share their experiences and insights. These perspectives can provide specific actions that have proven useful in one's own projects, offering applicable and directly relevant learning.

I frequently say "if you need someone to design and write a large application from scratch, hire a programmer. If you need someone to lead a team of programmers to develop and write a large application, hire me".

I wholeheartedly agree. While recent graduates and perhaps the younger interviewees might be more comfortable with Python, in a large-scale enterprise scenario, you might want to emphasize your skill in relevant ecosystems like Java and Spring. Another important insight that is overlooked, often due to pure naivete is the experience threshold where you can safely claim to "know" a language. With Java, for example, that would mean understanding how several edge cases in constructors and overloading, for example, with threads, collections and the time and space complexities of the algorithms implemented in library methods. Working with closely related frameworks like Django & Flask for python, should also help gain brownie points.

If there are areas that align with your strengths, then it's a good opportunity to dive into those. You can speak to trickier problems you've solved that relate to the given area.

First, listen to what the interviewer needs; don't rush to tell your whole story because possibly 90% of it is not relevant. In interviews, it is important to understand what the interviewer wants and then explain what you can offer.

Based on your experience: - you can describe the successful projects that you have done. - your current and previous positions - your strength in problem-solving - your knowledge of principles and concepts - your ability to use technical tools and collaborate with your teammates

Being asked this question is a sign that something is wrong. Either you haven't been contributing to any open source projects so you have nothing to show, or the employer hasn't bothered to look because they don't value your time.

I recommend to spend some time to research what the company/group/community does and prepare a mindset of your strengths in their field of activity and also weaknesses.
