When we think of D&I, we often stop at color. I had an experience years ago where the way I spoke was put into question regarding who I was. Often, if people of color speak "correctly" You are said to be speaking white, or if, like in my case a prospect years ago who I'd never met yet communicated constantly via phone with, was shocked that I was black when we finally were able to meet. Please use this as a coaching moment. I spent the meeting explaining speech/language bias to him and how that affects how he may view others, like me. Sometimes we don't need a town hall meeting or a grand training. Coach in the moment with one situation at a time.

One thing I have always found helpful is have diversity not for the sake of it , not for just ticking some boxes But diversity for real Diversity in a group in terms of age , sex , religion, background, cultures etc . It helps a lot . I have always learnt and benefited from having diversity in my team as I have worked globally. So yes it's a must to have diversity and inclusion on real .

One has to share the experience honestly. We all have dealt with situations having implications for diversity and inclusion and may have noticed biases conscious or unconscious one. This is a contentious topic right now, so it is important that you are able to clearly articulate your thoughts and values in this space. If you are worried about saying the wrong thing and losing the client, you probably should steer clear of this space entirely. Being open and honest about your experiences and thoughts right from the start is the best approach.

Articulate your core values and beliefs regarding diversity and inclusion. Communicate a genuine commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, both personally and professionally, rather than just ticking some boxes. Identify key principles such as respect, empathy, and fairness and allyship that underpin your approach to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. In a D&I discussion, own values aligning to the them will always be beneficial. When we support a cause of equality, when we voice our opinions against discrimination , when we express solidarity, when we are vocal about some cause, we need to showcase our commitment and unless these are part of our values, we will not be taken seriously.

I would then share examples that also started by assessing the context in which the initiative was managed, listening to people to understand their concerns and their perspective: inclusion starts from the very beginning of the journey. I would answer the question :) But first, I would ask what specifically are they curious about. Have I coached around the topic of D&I? Have I coached people with diverse experiences, neurodiversity etc.? Have I designed and delivered training programs in this area? Whatever the question is, also gives me an indication of what the company`s approach and/or direction is towards the topic.

I would ask how the organization defines "Diversity and Inclusion;" What current initiatives or policies have they implemented regarding D&I; What's been successful / unsuccessful, and how they're measuring progress & results; and then I'd ask what they specifically want to know about my D&I experience that relates to their company goals and objectives.

Interviews are reciprocal dialogues. Ask about the company's D&I initiatives. Genuine commitment to diversity should be ingrained from top to bottom, and reciprocal questioning allows you to gauge the sincerity of a potential employer. Enquire about: Their D&I leadership programs The makeup of their executive board What do their retention statistics look like for diverse talent?
