What do you do if you're asked "Where do you see yourself in five years?

Take a moment - think about why they're asking you this: are they expecting you to stay in the company that long? If you're interested in a specific something that doesn't align with the interview/job position you are applying for, it may be best to change the focus to what you want to achieve in your personal life than where you want your career to take you - unless it aligns completely with their outlook, are you expecting to remain with any employer that long? For people who have spent their entire careers in a single employer, they rarely intended to stay beyond 2-3 years, and only did so because the work was enjoyable, there was good support and excellent colleagues. It may be worth asking how many longstanding staff the company has.

How would you like to be in 5 years? This is truly a question that deserves a lot of reflection! I would also complement this question: - What moves you (your Ikigai)) - What are your short, medium and long term goals? - What will you intend to do when you achieve your proposed goals for the 5 years? - What will be your next steps after completing these 5 years? Remember, what moves the world are the questions that make us reflect, not the answers! Happy reflections on your future!

I've often found the answer and approach to this question differs between my male and female clients. The obvious answer is to reflect and consider your own values in proportion to the company's. In practice, my male clients find it much easier to visualise & "see" themselves (in terms of action, behaviour, habit etc) in a projected scenario 3-5 years in the future. My female clients fare much better by framing the question internally as "how do you feel in 5 years", and speaking from a position of putting themselves in that future vision somatically & affectively.

Es gibt ehrlich gesagt verschiedene Wege hier zu reagieren und ich befasse mich gerne mit der Realit?t. Wenn der Job perfekt zu dir passt, dann kannst du frei ?ussern, wo du gerne hin m?chtest. Wenn es aber nicht ganz klar ist, ob der Job perfekt passt, du aber keine Wahl hast, dann solltest du dir eine Antwort zurechtlegen, die dem potenziellen Arbeitgeber auch zusagt. Wie gesagt, ich behaupte nicht, dass dies optimal ist, aber wenn es dir darum geht, den Job zu bekommen, sind das die Optionen die du hast :-)

No debes demostrar que estas interesado, debes estar interesado, dise?a tu lugar de trabajo ideal, donde quieres trabajar, elige y se coherente, de esa manera no debes decir que quieren escuchas, diras lo que sientes.

It will be very opportune if you can align your objectives for the next 5 years with the future vision of the company you work for. Unfortunately, reality shows us that it will not always be possible to achieve this alignment. Contemporary scenarios change very quickly and people change too. I demonstrate enthusiasm for advancing my skills within the company and pursuing personal growth, showing my commitment to both professional success and personal fulfillment.

Future goals will need to be built step-by-step and with a lot of emotional balance throughout the process. Reactions of frustration may arise due to something not being accomplished and even anxiety due to the delay in achieving concrete results in some processes. The important thing is to stay alert to prevent these reactions from taking you out of focus.

The ones who stay curious are usually the ones to win the game in the long run. Tying your five year plan in with some sort of continuing education or aspiration to take courses to improve a skill shows that you are thinking long-term. It demonstrates that you understand that neither you, nor the company, nor the market are standing still and that continuous learning and improvement are the ticket to success.

Learning will be continuous and demonstrating to the company your proactivity and availability to participate in training and qualifications will generate an alignment of purposes, facilitating your growth and that of the company itself.
