What do you do if you're an AI intern facing challenges in the field and need to overcome them?

I hire AI interns! First step is to do the obvious and type that problem into Google and Stack Overflow. If one of our interns comes to us with a problem and very clearly didn't seek open-source guidance from the Internet, I will tell them to do so first. Then, come to your peer on the team, your direct supervisor, or another mentor in the company, depending on who has the best suited expertise to help you, starting with the person with the least seniority that is still likely able to help first. Senior team members are often busy but very happy to help junior members on a team when it's clear you've made a good faith effort to figure it out on your own and with other people first.

When faced with a problem, AI interns are encouraged to start by searching for solutions on Google and Stack Overflow. If they haven't sought guidance from open-source resources, they're advised to do so before seeking assistance internally. Interns are then encouraged to reach out to peers, supervisors, or mentors within the company, starting with those who have the most relevant expertise and working their way up in seniority. Demonstrating a sincere effort to solve the problem independently and with the help of others is key to gaining support from senior team members, who are often busy but willing to assist junior members who have made genuine attempts to find solutions.

As an intern, I encountered numerous challenges, but my mentor (manager) was always there to assist me in overcoming them. The first and most crucial step in arriving at a solution for any given problem is to have a clear understanding of the requirements, which can only be achieved through effective communication with peers and superiors. I love interns that work to upskill themselves. Coursera is your friend, particularly Andrew Ng's classes in deep learning and machine learning. Try Kaggle competitions, play around with open source data, and otherwise embrace independent exploration. That's the best way to build expertise and passion within your field of AI. Hackathons are also great for this learning.

As an intern, along with building professional relationships, learning is the most important! Working with code, models, databases can be tricky. As an intern, I would try to explore documentation, try prototyping and would then reach out to the team / manager with questions and findings. This does 2 things 1. Teammates feel you can explore stuff on your own which shows your passion / interest. 2. With the interesting questions and findings you now have, its much easier to get a lot of learning from seniors in the team / org!

As said above, it's great to start independent exploration on Kaggle, with Google open source data, and other online hackathons. Practice the exercise of data processing and building an ML model start to finish in solving a particular problem, then solve secondary and tertiary problems that arise from that initial model.

I have a philosophy of building grand structures, starting with small building blocks. Initially, I choose a few small AI projects that cover diverse frameworks and domains. After working on some of them, I opt for a complex project that necessitates cross-functional and domain experts. Having gained experience from several small projects, I can comprehend the project's requirements to a certain extent. Then, I create the project's architecture and follow the agile methodology to develop it. It's not necessary to know everything before starting a task. All you need is the courage to take on challenges.
