What do you do if your warehouse operations candidates lack the necessary skills and qualities?

In the warehouse where I managed operations, we faced a challenge: candidates lacked essential skills. Instead of despairing, I devised a plan. First, I implemented comprehensive training sessions, covering everything from inventory management to safety protocols. We focused on both technical skills and soft skills like teamwork and problem-solving. Next, partnering experienced team members with new recruits, we fostered a culture of mentorship, continuous learning and a supportive learning environment. Additionally, we streamlined processes and provided resources for self-improvement. To ensure continuous improvement, I encouraged feedback and open communication. As a result, our team flourished.

Various type of operations, like, placement of product at right place, inbound/outbound activities, health and safety issues, lifting of heavy products, use of forklift, and other handling equipment. Almost, while hiring a manager, one KPI is set as staff training. This is manager expertise to analyse the shortcomings of his staff. Effective short training sessions should be arranged. Main training must be at work place training, and rotation method should be used, so that every staff member working in warehouse could run each function independently. Here, manager should behave like a leader than a manager. This would help warehouse operation staff to improve their skills which will definitely increase their confidence.
