What do you do if your volunteers lack creativity and need inspiration?

Every volunteer role needs a vision statement attached. I do not mean necessarily every task, but every position. How does what this person is being asked to do carry the mission forward? What value will they personally feel? Answering those two questions will create shared ownership and burden so that the leader is not carrying it alone. There can be joy in what was otherwise thought of as drudgery when the mission is shared.

In my experience as a team leader at a community center, noticed the volunteers were losing energy and creativity. I introduced a series of energizing sessions, including fun icebreakers, creative challenges, guest speaker inspirations, art and craft activities, and storytelling sessions. These activities rejuvenated and inspired the volunteers, leading them to propose new initiatives like a community garden and art workshops. Overall, the volunteers felt more engaged and appreciated, transforming the team into a vibrant and innovative group ready to tackle new challenges.

We were planning an educational conference around the theme of "financial safety" - and I empowered my volunteer advisory board to contribute their ideas on vendors we should invite and topics we should cover. One said, "Obviously we'll need the banking industry, law enforcement, and technology sectors represented." I would have never broken it down that way! Empowering them to contribute to the brainstorming led to a much more successful event.

This not only encourages creativity but also fosters a sense of teamwork and shared ownership of the project.

Maintaining communication with your volunteers is critical! As someone who manages campaign volunteers, it can be easy for them to flake due to a scheduled shift time no longer working or a new commitment arising. I need to know that, so I can find new ways for them to stay involved. Unless I’m proactively communicating, I have no way of finding that out when they don’t show up to volunteer. Little text check-ins are a volunteer manager’s secret weapon—you learn what works best for your volunteer and build a personal rapport.

In my experience the feedback loop is essential for both the organisation and the volunteer. However, volunteers will often not offer to much detail on how their work is going and need encouragement. I recommend a volunteer celebration event at least once a year. Showcase to the whole audience the success stories and highlight the volunteers input. What does that mean to your organisation? How many people have been able to access support that wouldn’t have been offered without the volunteer etc. This way you are creating a positive feel good environment. Build one to one relationships and enable confidence and creativity to flow both ways.

Regularly soliciting input on project progress and seeking suggestions for improvement fosters a culture of openness and collaboration. Continuous constructive feedback is vital for success in any creative endeavor.This can be achieved by creating opportunities for feedback: integrating feedback mechanisms into your workflow, such as regular check-ins, team meetings, or anonymous suggestion boxes. Encourage team members to share their thoughts openly and constructively. Additionally, ensure that feedback is specific and timely: providing feedback that is specific, actionable, and timely.

I find that when you bring groups like this together and have a round table discussion, ideas begin to flow. Often a person will hold back thinking their idea holds little value, but once they are in an environment to share freely, they learn others share their views.

As the leader consider whether you are setting the example being creative and inspiring… what do you need to change personally to inspire your volunteers. Then do something fun and creative with your team and follow that up with an opportunity for feedback my from them to determine what is needed to create a positive environment going forward. Make sure you follow through on the feedback and initiate some of the ideas proposed by the volunteers. Where there is buy in from them, creativity, enthusiasm and inspiration is much more likely.

Most people don't "lack" creativity - they just withhold their ideas if they aren't confident the ideas are welcome.
