Be authentic, appreciative, and humble. Relationships: Create a team culture. Do everything you can to build relationships with and within the team. Put people together on projects. Create PODs. Inject humor into your daily work. Keep things light but hold people to a high standard. Mentor and highlight good team behaviors. Recognize and reward for this in performance reviews.

When trying to build trust and rapport with a virtual team it takes time and persistence. I find that in the beginning it is best to over communicate while providing positive feedback and encouragement. It is easy to say something is wrong or not how you want expected it. The thing I have found is to better define your expectations first. Then praise for what was presented along with challenging but constructive open ended questions back to the team members on the potential gaps. Guide them to the solution. They will begin to trust your advice and learn to appreciate your commments.

I’ve been dealing with leading teams virtually since the mid-teens. Outpacing my in-person team leadership time. One of the most common issues I’ve encountered with lack of trust is from a prior manager who developed a culture of toxicity. Occasionally, it’s been a specific team member causing the toxic environment. By and large, remote team relationships isn’t rocket science. It’s basic human interaction competencies. Right Assessment is key in such situation. And this can be achieved with empathy, unbiased approach and open mind. Approach the situation with clear mind, as if you are doing it first time.

Trust is developed by knowing each-other. So at the beginning, if your team is new, invest time in "out of the project" activities. Since we are talking about virtual team and there is no way to go together to the bar, find another format - Quizz, for example. Any game which may push people to talk and to play together.

TREAD CAREFULLY. Many, if not most of us, can navigate social interactions without letting them devolve into politics or social issues. Some simply can not. Take care to get to know your team and know who is either very sensitive to offense or who is prone to give offense in every situation. Never put yourself or your team in a position where an event turns into a discussion on politics, social issues, etc. This may mean meeting with individuals privately first. "It isn't important whether anyone agrees with you about (topic) what's important is that it takes away from you as a team member and it hurts us as a team to be distracted by it"

Lead the way and talk about what you did over the weekend, something that went on with your family, etc. These steps build trust. Positive outcomes will follow if you can make team meetings and time spent working with their peers enjoyable by spending some time on "fun" or personal relationships.

One thing I’ve found to be helpful is recurring conversations with cross functional teams. Use this time to speak openly about miscommunications, misconceptions of job duties while ultimately researching solutions. Each team member no matter time or level should be required to give suggestions.

In my experience when any team has trust issues, it can be traced back to their leadership. I think management and teams don't understand accountability. This erodes trust and team morale. Accountability is not about setting up individuals to constantly prove themselves. It's about creating a culture of success and support for one another. It also means that while management is empathic it doesn't let inadequacy prevail. People have to hold themselves to a high standard. It requires individuals who buy into the organization's why. It means that there are actions immediately in place to assist those who are not on board or fall behind so the rest of the team doesn't feel abused.

Understand that people have things they love to do but work requires that they also do their least favorite things. For example some like to write so their focus is documents and presentations while others like to communicate where as the rest like coding or development. You should bring balance by allowing a mixture of responsibilities.

If we are talking about virtual team, most probably people are from different Countries and even Continents. Take into consideration Cultural differences. If you have people from US, Colombia, EU Countries, APAC - cultural differences are crucial to keep in mind and take into consideration developing the trust

I would advise that, IT executives should facilitate regular virtual team-building activities and interactions like ice breakers etc. Recognizing and celebrating team accomplishments help to foster a sense of shared purpose. Do this quarterly/ bi - annually. Also, address conflicts proactively and with empathy to maintain mutual respect by providing opportunities for one-on-one conversations to build individual connections. Lastly, as a leader, lead by example, modeling the trust and collaboration desired in the team.
