What do you do if your virtual collaboration in data engineering is falling apart?

As per my experience, if our virtual data team's communication seems scattered! Here's how I diagnose: 1. Pulse Check: One-on-ones & informal chats to assess morale & identify communication roadblocks. 2. Channel Chaos: Evaluate communication channels (Slack/email/video calls) for efficiency & information overload. Consolidate or add tools if needed. 3. Meeting Malaise: Analyze meeting effectiveness (agendas, focus, productivity). Make adjustments to maximize meeting value. 4. Documentation Dynamo: Review documentation accessibility & clarity. Update or create clear documentation to avoid confusion. 5. Collaboration Champions: Identify & empower team members who excel at virtual collaboration to share best practices.

In my experience, identifying root causes to virtual collaboration issues is the key to finding a successful remedy. Too frequently teams want to jump to a new platform or a new policy that they've read about on LinkedIn without understanding what their real problem is. Having worked remotely for the past 3 years, I've found that proper meeting planning with anonymous feedback for agenda setting followed by an open discussion (with cameras on, if possible) can really get the ball rolling when trying to assess whatever collaboration issue your team is having.

Offer guidance, support, and leadership to the team to navigate challenges effectively. Encourage creativity while providing necessary direction and assistance when needed. Encourage open and honest communication. Create a safe environment where team feels comfortable expressing their concern, sharing feedback, and proposing solutions.

The ping-pongs in our virtual data team Slack channel felt more like awkward silences. We needed to bridge the communication gap. First, I organized our digital toolbox. One thing that has greatly benefited me in my career is the ownership that my managers have allowed me for many of the projects I've contributed to. I think one benefit that many data engineers have is that our field is so young and developing so quickly that ownership needs to be in the hands of the people touching the data. Gone are the days of top down leadership for day to day tasks. To get the most value out of our data and technology assets, teams have to be nimble and enable their developers to make the ownership decisions that directly impact project success.
