An effective salary negotiation starts way before a job offer is made. The first step is the correct positioning on your resume. Don't just highlight what you "did", focus on the "impact" it had. Follow up with this during the interview process as well using higher order "action" words to describe your contributions. For eg. "built", "created", "collaborated" etc. are more powerful than "helped", "defined", or "discussed".

When you receive a salary offer, you should not accept it right away, unless it meets or exceeds your expectations.
