What do you do if your user interface is not effectively engaging users?

Addressing low engagement begins even before evaluating the UI or gathering usability feedback. Poor uptake may have to do with low user motivation rather than poor design. Ask yourself: Is the value proposition of your tool clear to your audience? Do your customers have clear motivation to engage? Is the outcome obvious and enticing? Then, define the term "engagement" and what success looks like very specifically. Identify (i) possible barriers to engagement or (ii) opportunities to amplify benefits to hit your goals. Then, run UX research studies to better understand how to address both of these.

User Feedback: -> Gather feedback through surveys, interviews, and analytics tools. -> Understand user pain points and areas of dissatisfaction. -> Use feedback to guide UI improvements and prioritize issues. Usability Testing: -> Conduct tests to observe user interactions in real-world scenarios. -> Identify navigation issues, unclear instructions, and functionality gaps. -> Gather insights to refine UI design and enhance user experience. Iterative Design: -> Adopt an iterative approach to make incremental improvements. -> Continuously refine the UI based on user input and testing results. -> Aim for a responsive design process that adapts to evolving user needs.

Conduct a research effectively. In order to gain better insights, you need to eliminate any form of biases you see during the research. From there, you feedback should help you find meaningful ways to help the users. For example, you'll get better insights from your empathy maps, you'll organize well your personas, and all of that will lead you to design the wireframes and the prototypes in a way that your users love. And yes, the feedback should focus on emotion as well. And yes, that's the great feedback you will receive from the users and from the team as well.

Conduct a user research and collect feedbacks directly from your users. Whichever research method you use, ensure the feedbacks are clear and communicates the opinions of your users. The goal is to understand their experience so the focus should be on them.

Then move to analyzing the data gotten from the feedbacks in order to identify recurring patterns and common issues. This analysis should be able to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of your product's UI.

Its a matter of humility to accept a usability blunder caused by design, but necessary to rectify it. A detailed behavioral and usability analysis can give an insight into where users are getting confused or lost during the journey. Although everything may seem perfect, a low retention or session time may still be a problem. The most likely explanation is that the design is useful, accessible, and valuable, but it may not be desirable.

I've relied on analytics software to gain insights into user behavior when faced with an interface that didn't seem to engage users effectively. By tracking metrics such as click-through rates, session duration, and user flow, I could pinpoint areas where users were encountering difficulties or disengaging from the interface.

When you gather data and analyse them , everything will become easier. For example sometimes a big problem only relates to a tiny but important element that you've not seen before. Users don't need your design to be perfect. They just need a clean and easy going design ??

Accessibility is the core of your design, especially during usability studies. Be ready to include the accessibility approaches in your goals for the usability studies. Observe how people interact with the design you have. Compare some versions of the screens you are presenting and the ones presented before. When improving your usability and during the presentation to your team, highlight the elements that need to be focused on.

If the UX becomes better then the usability will also be better. If the product lacks intuitiveness and isn't user-friendly, then it has a bad UX so improving the usability should be the focus.

You should remember that sometimes keep users in your site or product is not main goal. Sometimes insights from analytics lie to us. If a user be in your website for an hour , it may be because of bad user experience that they can't find anything easily. As a user's perspective, you need an enjoyable and valuable experience . That is a win win game for business and user.

My first suggestion would be to test why your UI isn’t engaging your users by testing and observing your target audience while they are using. Be sure to video tape them using your app or website. Then redesign your app or website and test again. This will help demonstrate the reasons your site is not working properly. Why record? You’re developers will need to view why your users are not accomplishing their tasks or enjoying your website- it all depends on your goals and your audience.

Continuously monitor the progress and performance of the UI after you've implemented the changes. This will enable you to see if the modifications you made were effective or not and if it produces the desired results.
