I've transitioned from a role in my comfort zone, to a new life that was hugely outside my comfort zone to begin with. I knew my skills were transferable but I needed to learn HOW. I'd studied, and read, and met people... but it wasn't until I went out and did the new thing that I really learnt what mattered and what didn't... so just go for it!

I got my start as a professional after more than 10 years of volunteering. Once I got my feet wet as a volunteer and found my niche, I carefully chose my volunteers roles with strategic goals in mind for experience in the new direction I was going. I think the trick to this is leverage active listening and empathy very well and most of all: stay humble. Yes, absolutely, we need to recognise that we may have been brought into a new project to offer “fresh eyes” and a unique approach…but to do this, we absolutely need to understand the status quo and what do best practices look like in this new field before trying to tear everything down and start afresh. Doing so ultimately had infinite propensity to isolate you from your more experienced peers in your new role. Conversely, remember that your voice and your opinion matter: joining a new team and having your ideas constantly shot down due to being too outlandish is a really bad sign of culture fit.

I hate to say it, but if transferable skills are not transferring, then maybe they are not so transferable. Now this can be because they are more operational than we realize OR it can be because we are not as effective in their execution as we thought. Either way, the solution is to engage in self-development and to make necessary changes.

What are the transferable skills in a career transition? The question can be interpreted in two ways. !. that the leader is promoted and the company considers that there was no transfer and 2. that it is someone from the team that is promoted and they evaluate the leader's skills and do not observe them. In either case, the leader, in addition to being a leader, must act as a mentor and from there, transfer skills, ethics, values and competencies. The integral leader is not going to let him pass and his entire team will have been adequately accompanied. Not all the leader's skills will be transferred, especially those that are observable and connect with attitude.

Here's my visualization - but this will only work for people who have read Harry Potter. Remember when Harry and Ron were trying to board the train at platform 9 3/4 and everyone could get on but them. They didn't know that the house elf, Dobby, was blocking their entry. If your skills aren't transferring, you have a house elf in your midst. Dobby blocked Harry because he didn't want the young wizard to be pulled into destructive plot. Harry still got to Hogwarts with a few bumps, scrapes, and bit of drama. I tell this story because despite the delay, you are going to get to the next transition. What you do with the time matters: address the house elf, find a clever way to get there regardless, etc. Your choice will evolve your skills.
