What makes them all play in a similar manner? - They know the game that they are playing and how it play it - They know the goal of that game - They know the role of others in the team as much as they know about their own. - They know about the competitor and its strengths and weaknesses. - They know the ultimate objective of the team Misalignment in any of the above ? 1. players play the wrong game 2. players play the game wrong I use this. There is a element of team dynamics that encounter areas of more cultivation than others. The rooting of some team members may delay to their own hindrances with ego or misplaced foresight for what a visionary leader maybe seeking to accomplish even with communicated details in care. Cognitive empathy to leverage logic and emotion with compassionate exchange has a tendency to erode aspects that seeking to delay the long term grasp of the vision. Continuing on with care and autonomy where needed may add an element to support this. While providing guidance to those who are seeking the insight for more clarity when that vision is not readily embraced. Start top to bottom. If your leadership team is misaligned, no need surveying the rest of the company, I already know the results. Given that it’s just a few people, meet with this team to document your long and short term vision components (10-year BHAG, 3-year milestone, 1-year plan, marketing strategy, core values, purpose, etc). I recommend 2 full day sessions. During this documentation process, you’ll flush out all of the misalignment and end with a document that provides the starting point for clarity. My company has gone through multiple pivots. Two days ago (you can check my recent post), I gathered everyone at a rented meeting room to go through a workshop related to the new business, a pitch about the new product, and a demo for the products we've been working on. Messaging is just not enough.

It sound like a noisy gong, but you MUST do this if you want absolute alignment.

Some people believe culture just naturally happens as a company grows. That is a recipe for disaster. A strong culture must be cultivated and support achievement of the vision. It takes work to conceive the values, monitor, and evaluate for teams acting in accordance with them. Just as a marriage takes work to thrive, a culture code is as close to a social contract as you can get in a company. And it needs to have the bite of real consequences when violated, which is why it needs to be tied to performance as much as other metrics.

It should be visible throughout the company and reinforced constantly. This breeds buy-in at all levels. An exciting vision rallies people around a future worth fighting for. Don’t be afraid to think big.
