What do you do if your team experiences a major failure?

Every team will experience a major failure at some time or another. It’s up to the leader to be at their best during these times. Transparency and encouragement are crucial as well as being available to each team member to help hold the culture together.

Moments of failure must be faced most rationally possible. One should neither value failure because the objective is not to commit them, nor ignore failures because an ignored failure can lead to a crisis. In these more than two decades of executive experience, the best way I have found what to do after a failure is to examine it, analyze its root causes, plan to mitigate the effects, plan how to avoid repetition, and communicate widely to the actors involved all the conclusions. This increases the likelihood that it will not happen again, improves trust within teams, and prepares them to improve in the next tasks.

It's also important to understand the cause of the failure. Was it willful negligence or due to trying something innovative? There's a big difference between the two. I agree the leader sets the tone after the failure as well as before it even occurs by clearly setting expectations.

Failures happen only to those who try! Winston Churchill once said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal." It is however important to acknowledge and own up to failure, take stock of the situation with the team and figure out where and how the goof-up occurred. Next is to carve out a recovery strategy as a group, and make sure that the learnings from the failure are factored in. The team needs to own up to successes and failures as a team. In one of my earlier employments, when I was heading the Sales function, we experienced many successes and failures. Evening get-togethers with the team always helped as it kept the morale from dipping beyond repair and strengthened the camaraderie further. Humans are resilient! Remember that!

In the event of a major team failure, it's important to lead with empathy and maintain a constructive outlook. Analyze the situation to understand what went wrong, and involve the team in identifying lessons learned and strategies for improvement. Focus on rebuilding morale and confidence through open communication, support, and emphasizing collective growth from the experience.
