What do you do if your sustainability career workspace is chaotic and unproductive?

In my experience, if your sustainability workspace is chaotic, you can adopt the following strategies to redress: 1. Integrate standards about timelines, deadlines, workplace behaviour etc 2. Have focused group discussions to address the chaos and look for collaborative solutions 3. Adopt a reward program to acknowledge improvement and initiatives to improve team productivity.

Firstly one would start by identifying the root causes of the chaos and lack of productivity. Develop an action plan to address issues.

Identify specific issues hindering productivity, like overflowing inboxes or a lack of project management tools. Understanding the root cause paves the way for a smoother workflow.

Setting priorities is a must to make the workspace less chaotic and more structured and streamlined. The first and foremost thing to do is create a calendar and then organize the workspace according to the calendar so that access to material becomes easy. Another aspect is to communicate the priorities set to the team so that everyone is in sync with the short-term tasks and long-term goals, and thus, the workspace becomes less chaotic and looks structured.

Priorities should be set to ensure important tasks are completed first. Establish clear goals and objectives. Determine which tasks have the most significant impact on sustainability efforts. Assign priority levels to tasks based on their importance. Communicate priorities effectively to team members.

Time Blocking has been a very valuable method for me personally. I often do a 30 min calendar blocks for specific tasks and really push myself to finish the task in a timely manner. This is something which we all need to be more aware of - time efficiency and speed. Time blocks in your working calender also gives you the freedom to focus on what is really important without getting the "next Teams meeting" into your calendar.

It is good to get everyone's feedback and mutual agreement on shared Ways of Working. This might involve getting the team together to agree on team goals and preferred ways of working as a team. Of course, for diversity and inclusion, there should still be a channel through which exceptions to the norm can raised and considered.

Effective communication and making sure that everyone understands the big picture and the different "small" tasks which need to be executed is crucial. We need to represent the end goal e.g. the mountain which needs to be climbed but also make sure that we focus on each stept towards this mountain (step by step at the time). Regular follow ups are also important to understand that everybody is going in the same direction.

In my opinion work and non-work are very closely related. The better I can manage my emotional, physical and psychical stake (e.g. sport, sleep, meditation etc.) the better and higher quality work I do. So make sure that your health and well-being is the first priority because this is the fundamental part of all other work and non-work related activities in your life.
