What do you do if your startup team is experiencing conflicts?

Taking a lawyer's approach, I'd call a team meeting. Ditched the "blame game" and focus on the communication breakdown, a problem we all (somewhat reluctantly) can usually agree on. It's not going to be easy, but after an hour of brainstorming and being direct, compromise should emerge. Some people need deadlines, others just need input and support. Bi-weekly check-ins could stop things getting bad. Tension might linger for a bit, but open communication will chip away at it - keep going! I suggest an escape room challenge - team build "off the job." Laughter and friendly competition is needed. It's a constant juggle, but working on good communication and teamwork is key to navigating the startup rollercoaster. I wish you luck! :)

Addressing issues quick does help avoid an issue growing into a crisis. I use a framework that is very effective for timely and effective crucial conversations: facts; feelings, wants. You start by addressing facts -- items you both will not dispute. Then discuss how it makes you feel (not them) and follow up with what you want going forward. It's a simple framework that can disarm and individual, reframe the conversation and focus on what we want in the future.

It is very helpful to agree on and use a conflict resolution "script". Most likely, this will start with facts - but intentionally as "facts as I remember them", as quite likely the parties will see things somewhat differently. Then, shift to how does that make me feel - that part is not disputable. And finally, state your "ask" explicitly. The response then acknowledges this, and utilizes a mirror. They also state what feelings they harbor, how they respond to the ask and possibly formulate a request of their own. In many cases, it will be very helpful if a third party can act as mediator and guide the discussion within such a framework.

Whether you are the full owner or have outside shareholders – I suggest having a board. Even if they don’t have the authority to hire m/fire you, they can be an amazing advisory group (and interpersonal mediator between you and other cofounders). Having a board will also create different disciplines and rhythms in the business that will help you long-term.
