I always strive to comprehend the value and less valuable features a particular technology will provide me. Sometimes, using several technologies will complement each other, but at times, one possesses so many features that the learning curve and cognitive overload become unbearable. Testing is a great method to become more at ease with technology. It requires time, but even the most complicated piece of software can be understood with effort and determination. Therefore, take your time, conduct research, and seek help when needed.

It is important to embrace technology for what it is. The virtual meetings allow for attendance that would not necessarily be able to be present. Collaboration on time, day, and cadence is important. Select a virtual meeting platform (Zoom, Teams, Webex, What's App) and make sure everyone knows how to utilize the platform before you start. This may mean setting up a playground to learn to navigate through the system, communicate via chat, emoji, or to add video or music to the meeting. Also teach them how to use whiteboard, and other collaboration tools so they stay engaged in the virtual process. Seek feedback (the good, the bad and the ugly) and pivot as necessary. Make it a fun experience.

Clearly with a SMART goal in mentoring you are headed for failure. Both mentor and mentee should come up with a SMART goal for their mentoring sessions. First you need to know how long the mentoring is going to last and break them down into weeks or days depending on your schedules. After you collaboratively set goals for each week or day you intend to meet. I believe that each goal should be a buildup of what you do the during the previous session. Know how long each session is going to last and make sure that you both are on time to meet that deadline. These are some ways you can set SMART goals for an effective mentoring.

The problem with goals arises when there are too many unclear ones. Even with all the existing frameworks designed to assist you in overcoming obstacles and achieving your goals, if you don't truly understand their value or the underlying reasons, things can quickly become overwhelming, leading to unfulfilled objectives. Keeping it simple is key. Determine precisely why you need to achieve a particular objective.
