What do you do if your remote algorithm developers need effective team leadership?

Understanding the unique needs of remote algorithm developers is key to effective leadership. Recognize work patterns, time zones, and communication preferences. Tailor management style accordingly; some prefer daily check-ins, others thrive with less frequent, in-depth discussions.

I actually disagree with this being the first step. I'm not saying that you shouldn't understand the needs of your developers. But it's not the first step. The first step is to clearly understand the goal of the project yourself & imagining how your team will effectively function to reach the goal. This should be followed by laying down the tooling and infrastructure with which you want your team to operate. Understanding your team members and their needs is something that should be done as a regular exercise irrespective of the project. What works for me is to pre-schedule a monthly one-on-one "pulse" meeting with each member of my team with the agenda of just discussing what is working for them and what needs to be improved.

In my experience, giving SMART goals for each member separately is rarely feasible and seldom works. What has worked for me is to give a collective SMART goal to the whole team and closely monitoring that goal with the entire team. This has resulted in increased morale, better communication, increased collaboration and stronger relationships amongst team members. The last advantage has a lot of long term benefits as well.

This is a tricky one. I have been in those shoes multiple times. I have worked with teams from Australia, UK, US, Italy, China, Hungary, Netherlands and obviously India (remote). Solutions which worked for me: - Come back to the drawing board and have whiteboarding as frequently as you can. - Have clear documentation of work and review being done with work owner. - Have granular level tasks defined and tracked under larger stories or Epic. - Having demos at least 3 times a week. Even 15 minutes demo will do wonder. - Having a good review and quality process in place. - Having a weekly status report. - Having mid-sprint reviews. Not required always. The combination depends on complexity of work and comfort level of team with same.
