What do you do if your Quality Assurance team is resistant to change?

What is their Willingness? And what is their Ability? Resistance from employees or stakeholders could be from comfort with the existing processes, skepticism about the benefits of change, or ineffective change management planning. Or is it just a lack of awareness and/or understanding? Maybe they don't fully understand the concepts and principles of the quality management element in question. Based on this information, you can determine the path forward. Do you need to direct them on how to do it, sell them on why to do it, or both?

Start by communicating openly with team members to understand their concerns and perspectives. Listen to their feedback and address any misconceptions or fears they may have about the proposed changes. Provide clear and compelling reasons for why the changes are necessary, emphasizing the benefits they will bring to the team and the organization as a whole. Offer training and support to help team members adapt to the new processes or technologies. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, where team members feel empowered to suggest and implement changes themselves. Building trust and fostering a collaborative environment will help overcome resistance and drive successful change within your Quality Assurance team

Understanding the resistance to change is the most important step. It’s not always easy to find out why this resistance is present. Finding the real “why” can mean adjusting your approach, perhaps even reverting to the original state if this change turns out to be wrong. I am disappointed to see that the identified steps do not consider the possibility that resistance may be warranted. The steps are geared toward convincing/selling, and plowing onward. Why not use resistance as a feedback mechanism to challenge and strengthen your original assumptions?

When leadership puts quality on low priority and do massive layoffs back to back lowering morale amongst those left behind to fill in dual roles or more - impacting quality negatively even more.

Nobody welcomes change—it's just a part of human nature. The initial step in handling change is recognizing that the team will likely resist it. Following that, it's essential to examine the consequences if the change isn't accepted, its advantages & costs. For a leader, understanding a change & its effects thoroughly is key. If not understood, collaborating with the team & relevant stakeholders is vital. Once understood, the subsequent step is to gain the team's trust & encourage them to implement the change on a trial basis, despite any resistance. Leading by example is crucial here, try implementing the change yourself & demonstrate its benefits. If the change promises positive results, the team will be motivated to embrace it as well

Communication, empathy, and collaboration are key to overcoming resistance and facilitating a smooth transition.

It is also important to communicate the reason for the change. It is most likely that the team members are not even aware of the new regulations/requirements/etc. It could be that by providing clear and convincing information, the resistance to change will slowly decay over time.

I found it a bit difficult to silo my answer into one category, because it's really a combination of several. Resistance to change follows the old adage of, "It's how it's always been done". Technology changes, and with it, so should processes to keep up. But it requires Empathy to the resistance, Emotional Intelligence to lend an ear and understand why; Leadership to demonstrate the benefits and listen to criticism, and Support to help educate and evangelize new practices and foster the opportunities for everyone to grow and learn. It won't happen overnight, but if you can secure commitment from the team, anything is possible with a collaborative effort.
