What do you do if your public speaking presentations lack impact without visual aids?

They should only help reinforce the ideas for your listeners. It's best to work on your public speaking skills so you can give a strong talk without needing visual aids, unless they are necessary to support your message.

He meant some things you understand quickly, some take more time, and others need a lot of thought. While reading these lines you will go for imagination right that's the trick. If your presentations don't work well without pictures, try storytelling instead. Make them think and live that moment by your stories. Share stories that grab people's attention without relying on slides. Be the storyteller who paints pictures with words. Stories stick with people long after the presentation is done.

If you have the ability to share stories about a variety of topics, you will not need visual aids. By using the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch) you can paint a picture that even the most beautiful of visual aids cannot top. Why this story for this audience 2. Why this Story Now 3. Why should you be telling this story. If the above questions are answered properly, you'll get the right story for your audience

Good storytelling puts me in the same moment as the speaker. Paint the picture -- what do I see, hear, feel? Also, telling the story gives us the message -- there is a moral or lesson to be learned from the story - purpose driven storytelling. The story is connected to your talk, not just a lovely story to be told.

It can sometimes be hard to get to the core, the key message, of your talk. Try this: what would you want an 8 year old to know about your message? Now craft your talk around this, in language an 8 year old can understand. It's the quickest way to simplify your language.

Simple language is always a good idea. Unless it is not. As a general rule, use the simple language. Use short sentences. Use the full stop. Use the full stop using the intonation. These are good rules. Once you master it, you can start playing strategically with longer sentences. They still have to make sense and be well structured. It's important to maintain variation in the length of the sentences. Using short, medium, and long sentences is recommended to give the speech magic and avoid being stuck in a monotone. The best way to engage your audience is to give them a meaningful experience during your talk. It's the difference between telling someone how to ride a bike, and actually getting to practice riding a bike. For example, if you are a coach and you're doing a presentation, give the audience the experience of what it's like to have you coach them, and the results you're able to get for your clients. After talking about a problem you help with, have them do short activities at their tables or in pairs that gives them a new perspective or way or solving that problem. This changes your talk from just a talk, to a transformative mini coaching session where you've made a difference for your audience... making them want to book you as a coach.

My favorite way of engaging the audience is to do call and response. "Raise your hand if you have ever felt this way ...." "What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say pancakes?" Etc , etc ... ask some easy questions that follow along with the format of your speech and no visual aids will be needed. It will be just like having a conversation with the audience. Definitely memorable.

Even if you don't have visual aids, you can still do a lot of group activity, case studies, role play etc. to keep the audience engaged.

It should feel like you're practicing for your once-in-a-lifetime performance. - Be attentive to the energy level of your speech. Where can you increase it with jokes, vocal variety, body language audience interaction? - Practice in front of different audiences and check their non-verbal cues.. how are they perceive the speech, and be open to feedback. - Understand your weak points in delivery through practice. Film yourself practicing and notice: do you shake? Have monotone delivery? excessive movement on stage? Then practice each point separately till you master it.

Great speakers use their whole being to communicate their message (with or without visual aids). Movement, sudden or slow gestures, pauses and stillness, changes in vocal pace and volume and tone, facial expressions, eye contact… all of these things can be honed and practised to give your presentation the polish that turns it from ineffective to unforgettable. Embrace the extra focus this kind of presentation puts on you; don’t be afraid of it. Rise to the challenge - with all eyes on you, can you own the room?

In my experience.. The presentations ( ppt) are like colour to the cake … But what matters is the taste that is how you set real world examples and explanation… Experiential over Theoretical always .. Try to connect the audience on - why is this on the table ? rather than starting with what is on their table ! So visual aids and presentations is just a medium but i believe once you are strong enough with your concepts and factual data.. even practice takes a back seat and what you deliver is phenomenal experience for the audience. Record yourself or present in front of a mirror when you are practicing, it's a great way to understand how your body language will be viewed. Also don't be afraid of pausing, it can seam awkward when practicing - but is valued by the audience who can digest what you have just said.

Then IF it will be helpful for the audience add some visual aids in. Slides are optional. You are the star of your presentation.

Our presentation can actually have much bigger impact if NOT supported by visuals. We are overstimulated by visual inputs all day long.
