What do you do if your project team is struggling with work-life balance?

With a condition that is affecting the work life balance of employees will definitely reduce the productivity and Proactiveness of employees. If management pushes it saying this is the requirement in this scenario, that will again demoralise employees to work with the employer. Definitely after an assessment of current work load/stress, management needs to strengthen their employees with more confidence if possible some additional resources to deal with.

It's true that without clear communication, managing a project can be really difficult. For me, face to face communication is very important. Which is why, in a work from home situation, I prefer to connect via collaboration platforms like zoom or cliq. I prefer to make one touch-base call on a daily basis, although the number increases when there is any change in instructions. I made it clear that no one should think twice while connecting me in case there is an issue, be it work-related or personal.

I will suggest to use Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize the jobs according to Importance and Urgency. Eisenhower’ matrix will help to achieve more with the heavy work load and work-life balance.

Main root cause for effecting work-life balance is Prioritizing and delegating the work among team members. 1- Have a precise work-schedule between team members without any hassle so that it will avoid conflicts. 2- Understand and Prioritize the tasks among the team that needs to be completed within deadline, for instance allocate sufficient resources with right person to complete the project. 3- Not but not the least delegating the task is most important for team members because that reduces the most of issues in managing work-life balance for example few tasks can be completed by working remotely that motivates the team to work with full enthusiasm to finish tasks before deadlines.

This is a little difficult for some people to understand and accept - You cannot do everything, you are a human being and the tasks can be completed faster and better when we have divided the tasks according to each ones expertise. Additionally if in the service industry, aligning the deliverables according to the priority of the client is crucial too. There should always be the room for feedback from internal and external teams. As a PM, no matter how difficult it is, we should know how to politely push back the unnecessary developments which may hamper the system. This will save the system as well as the time of the developers. So that the rework on the tasks can be avoided.

Tenho repensado muito ao longo do tempo sobre delegar e dar autonomia. O primeiro ponto é a insistência, e saber delegar sem entrar no processo ou colocar a m?o na massa. As a PM, first of all, it says "manager" in the title itself. However most of the managers, get puzzled on the way of managing. try to do extra, go over the board and end up doing "Micromanagement" which may end up not as expected, worst case scenario, you may end up losing great resources. The more you try to hold the sand with a closed fist, it will slip away and the more you hold it with open palm, it tends to stay. Giving space to the team is very crucial, I have always seen better results. The more you try to hold on and try to get into tiny minute details, which is not required, the more they lose confidence over themselves and the work will get hampered.The productivity meeting the deadline, is the only thing that should matter.

The team joins with the mutual agreement on all the terms, & works accordingly. What happens when they come through all the TnCs, complete the work on or before time, w/o errors? Mostly it's overlooked and then the motivation of the them is gone. The productivity should increase with each and every milestone of the team. There should be small ceremonies that shows, that each and every member in the team is highly valued. There should be a good motivation to come to the office and work everyday and show better productivity.Also, there'll be days when the resources might not feel good. It'll be our responsibility to understand & support them, empathize.Small events, get a ways, Friday lunches,team bonding and happiness and recreation.

I will strictly order them to turn off their PCs or laptop at sharp 6:00 PM(off time) and do not sit overtime. Overtime will result in stress and anxiety and if my employee is going through stress and their work life balance is disturbed it's a shame for me and my leadership.

It is essential to lead by example. Create rules that will benefit the whole team’s well being and actually do it. It’s easy for some people to feel guilty of finishing off early when they see their bosses and most of their team mates extending their time in the office. If they can see that you, as a team leader value time off work, as much your time in the office it will be much easier for them to decide when to stop working. Having a thought in mind that they have to finish the work after 7.5 hours will also help them to have mindset to get things done at the right and can promote efficiency as well

In my experience, having done all of the above suggested solutions, it’s important to show some empathy. This goes a long way in creating a sense of balance. It creates a sense of understanding. People need to know that they matter.
