What do you do if your project team is experiencing conflicts?

Ignoring conflicts won't make them go away. Acknowledge that there is a conflict and that it needs to be addressed. My four step approach is Recognition Acceptance Open Dialogue Normalization By acknowledging the conflict in a constructive and proactive manner, teams can lay the foundation for resolving it effectively and moving forward with a renewed sense of collaboration and cohesion

Conflicts can be in many forms, within the team and with an external team. Each have their own way of handling. In short, conflicts can be very stressful to deal with but the more you wait the worse it gets. Start by understanding what is the disagreement that led to the conflict. This will provide you insights without pushing your bias into an agitated situation. Being conversational with both sides and asking clarifying questions is the way to go. Remember, at this stage, you shouldn't really send non-verbal signals of agreement, just listen to the concerns and empathize.

It is always important to address conflicts promptly through open communication, active listening. At the end of the end of the day it is important for all to understand that everyone is a human being with emotions attached, so do consider some empathy. Identify the root causes, acknowledge the differences and find mutual ground. Implement conflict resolution strategies and provide support to the team for a Positive team bond.

While I often see recommendations about having a big open meeting, I believe many engineers are not well suited for this approach as they tend to display social anxiety and introversion, which means they should be approached individually, and should be given time to know the agenda in advance so they can run through their analytical and judgment processes without the pressure of their peers, or the project manager, during that time. Conflict is natural, but is a human factor, and the most successful management of humans requires approaches as diverse as the personalities on your team. Once individual issues and possible solutions have been identified, the project manager can develop a strategy to gain consensus in a joint meeting.

After you have an idea about the reason for the conflict, it can be personality clash or simple disagreement on design, consider creating a media for open communication. This becomes crucial as your responsibility becomes to maintain openness of this conversation. In reality, you shouldn't wait for a conflict to foster safe environments for members to speak their minds. If that's the case, it's a note for you to proactively creating those spaces. In the middle of a conflict, to stop it from further escalating, mediate conversations and heavily facilitate conversations. Disassociate ideas from individuals, discuss ideas and their strengths.

In my experience, conflicts often start with misunderstandings. People usually see things from their own perspective. When this happens, it's important to open dialogue between both sides. The goal is not to favor one side, but to understand the root of the problem. Building good communication is key.

It is very easy to lose sight of progress in middle of a conflict, specially when individuals are there to win an argument. As a leader your role becomes very important to keep the dialogues on topic and always have an agenda to make progress. Set directions and expectations on both sides. Disagreement at workplaces are healthy, it just needs to be respectful. Again the answer is, it depends. Conflict is a natural part of the team building process (storming). That usually works itself out as the team members find their roles. But if it is of a personal matter the team leader needs to step in and make sure this is resolved before it causes damage to the team structure.
