What do you do if your professional relationships in the nonprofit sector are strained?

In my experience, one other root cause of tension is cultural differences. When I assumed leadership of a faith-based charity, I had just five years in my country of adoption. There were some areas of friction among others like communication styles, and perception of respect. For example, I had problems at first with the concept of personal space and eye contact. Rather than wait for my team members to adopt my communication style, I acknowledged and appreciated the cultural diversity within the team. This mindset fostered a healthy and vibrant team relationship.

Open and honest communication with the goal to understand in any relationship is key. In my professional experience working with not-for-profit organizations in a variety of capacities, as well as in diverse markets and sectors over the last 15 years, strain and conflict comes when people do not value/prioritize listening to understand another’s position-they listen to respond, to prove their point or assert their power. Genuinely asking the question “how can I help” opens up dialogue to respectfully discuss root issues, and sets a platform for understanding and collaboration. If parties prioritize the organizational strategic goals, any strain should be able to be worked through with open and respectful dialogue.

Having a clear appreciation of divergent opinions and understanding of different cultural perspectives ensures that you are aware of potential pitfalls.

Again based on my experience, I have helped diffuse tension in an otherwise potentially good relationship that turned sour because of miscommunication between two parties. One often neglected solution is to bring in an impartial third party. I have been involved in this kind of resolution and acted when communication came to a standstill as a respected mentor, offering assistance to stir both sides toward a positive outcome. In both cases, I have seen good working relationships restored. In all the scenarios described, I have approached resolution with compassion, tact, and a cooperative mindset.

Skip the overthinking! Honest conversations are key to mending strained relationships. Identify the issue, apologize if needed, or offer forgiveness. Then, move forward with your impactful work. Remember, personal struggles shouldn't hinder our collective mission in the non-profit sector.
