The resources coming into IT (not just on outsourcing engagements) do not have the right level of mentorship to teach "critical thinking". I recently led an outsourcing recovery engagement and what I found was that when performing a Root Cause Analysis, folks were identifying symptoms. They were not answering the question "if what was true would the problem never have occurred?". The next issue was that their remediation activities would not have eliminated the problem in the impacted environment AND all others. It took a 2-3 month effort to begin to turn the corner.

In my experience, the initial step in problem-solving involves identifying the root cause. Once identified, it's crucial to collaborate with a suitable vendor capable of addressing the issue promptly and cost-effectively. During vendor evaluation, due diligence should be a priority. Additionally, calculating the return on investment (ROI) before outsourcing and selecting the right vendor is essential. Hidden costs and terms and conditions must be thoroughly considered during the evaluation process. Finally, after implementing the solution, continuous monitoring of benefits relative to ROI ensures effective problem resolution.

Improving problem-solving skills in IT outsourcing involves a multifaceted approach, including understanding the nuances of outsourcing, selecting the right partners, and managing relationships effectively. It’s crucial to engage in continuous learning, stay updated with industry best practices, and develop a clear understanding of both technical and business aspects of the projects. Additionally, fostering strong communication skills, embracing diverse perspectives, and leveraging collaborative problem-solving strategies can enhance one’s ability to address complex challenges in IT outsourcing effectively

So how does one find a mentor, do some research and homework then just ask them. May get a few NOs more than likely a Yes! Then be a mentor to someone who recognizes your skill and intelligence.
