It’s a valuable skill in system development and problem-solving.

To understand any given system, you have to be able to map the system in your mind... or better yet map the system interactions in a tool like Miro. Visualizing the system and its gaps helps you identify pain points and then address them one step at a time. Even before you get to any question of "What is the problem we should address?" You should look first to understand the system as a whole.

One thing I have found helpful is to list down early in the System Requirements analysis phase all the existing features/ variables that are existing or getting introduced soon. A simple table or list with such features identified helps make a note of nature of interactions and early thinking of behaviors of such interactions. A table is a wonderful tool with rows and columns identifying all features/variables and possible outcomes respectively. This approach leaves little to speculations, it converts unnecessary overconfidence to real solution thinking even if in a brief way initially. In later phases when designer/ critical thinker brings deeper aspects to the problem being analyzed, these initial interaction pictures provide directions.

**Gather Information:** Collect relevant data, facts, and insights to inform your decision-making process. This may involve conducting research, analyzing user feedback, or consulting subject matter experts. Critical thinking involves considering multiple perspectives and sources of information. **Generate Alternative Solutions:** Encourage brainstorming and creativity to generate a wide range of potential solutions to the problem. Challenge assumptions, think outside the box, and explore unconventional approaches. Critical thinking involves exploring diverse options and evaluating their potential effectiveness.

Critical Evaluation requires flavors of logical thinking and critical thinking. Based on the nature of the problem statement and its domain, various aspects of technical, cost, risk, environment, sustainability, people/ manpower, material resources, risks and mitigation strategies, main indicators for the next phases must be considered. Not only for engineering solutions but for majority of solutions, time is an important aspect and any options considered for the conclusion will be affected by timeline expectations to deliver - in a way this timeline aspect brings reality to free imagination with concrete steps which are practically possible to achieve. A good peer review may also be a good tool if situations allow such collaborations!

Getting to the bottom of a problem and selecting a solution to implement are important first steps - but it is as important to realize that this is usually just the beginning of a problem solution process. To get going fast is often the only possibility, but also to reflect quickly on first outcomes to check if we are moving into the right direction. In this step it is vital to find the right point when to switch between staying decisive (not loosing ones head under stress and really trying) - and dropping a promising but wrong approach in favor of the next. And also an important step, when the solution is found: celebrate! Too often we get stuck in jumping from one problem to the next - instead of sometimes appreciating a successes.
