Avoid deep dives into less impactful metrics unless they directly influence the risk assessment or decision-making process.

The idea of a presentation is to drive a central idea and let the audience walk away clearly understanding what's happened and will need to happen next, who needs to do what, etc. The first step is to define what the presentation will do, like - 1. Communicating a decision and its rationale 2. Providing the facts/data and driving a discussion towards a decision 3. Reporting an incident, and a detailed root-cause analysis With the end goal in mind, divide the content so that there's a coherent flow from one part to another. Ideally, each slide of a presentation should have the answer to: "so what?". Refer to previous relevant parts of the presentation as you go along, and more importantly, summarize the key takeaways at the end.

It's crucial to focus on a single key idea—the action we want from our listeners. Whether it's to adopt a new architectural solution, launch a new product, or introduce new metrics. Then, following a descending pyramid approach, delve into the details. If we place the key idea at the beginning, the entire discussion will be focused on our objective.

The most important thread for every presentation is the 'Story'. I have said this many times in these contributions and many of my blogs. I have practiced it and have seen positive results especially with higher management, and the engineering team. Also, to enforce the message such as while grooming or presenting, taking the team through the journey again and again, helps a lot. I do it like this, after every checkpoint, I take the audience again on the journey, like 'So far we have done this and this, and now we are going to do this'. Repeating it often, make the story clear and easy to remember. Happy Building.

A wise manager once posed a question that greatly helped me: 'What is the cost of adding another slide?' The answer is - zero cents. Following that, I started splitting slides with 2-3 complex diagrams into multiple ones without mercy. Despite the increase in the number of slides, the presentation only improves!

When they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words," it is true! Sometimes, breaking down complex topics into digestible visuals helps bring the point across. These simple visuals help the audience grasp the topics much easier. When I do presentations, I love incorporating graphs, charts, and other visuals that paint a picture and drive the points home! In your next presentation, make sure to break large chunks of text with simple visuals!

Audience engagement is so crucial to delivering presentations that captivate the audience. In my last company lockdown meeting of over 200 people, my presentation was the very last one at 5 pm! I got a feel for the audience over the course of 2 days, added some light humor through trivia questions, and kept a high energy delivery throughout the presentation. I asked everyone questions throughout the presentation and guaranteed that I will complete the presentation as quick as possible if we get maximum involvement! And guess what, it worked! :)

Presentation style at beginning of day (fresh minds) and at the end of tiring day needs to be different. - Be energetic in delivering the message, include personal examples to relate to the subject, add light humor and fun, make it interactive by involving the audience through questions, feedback, quiz. - Praise them for their feedback as this will encourage others to participate.
