Design, like good taste, is not something that can be easily taught, even if it's a lot easier to illustrate/demonstrate empirically. To really change something about your own "aesthetic language" you should first put a lot more effort into convincing yourself that design matters TO YOU TOO! Next, go on a mission of exploring true originality, looking for really smart/fresh ways of illustrating/emphasizing ideas with design choices. Find something that truly resonates with your personality and presentation style. After all, your choice of language should also correspond with how you "package the story".

I start by reevaluating the design of my slides. Consider using visually appealing templates, incorporating high-quality images, and utilizing a consistent colour scheme and font style. Simplify complex information into digestible chunks and use white space to enhance readability.

I recommend looking at a speakers slides who resonate with their audience and use them as a reference. Try to determine which elements stand out to you and make note of them for future design. Look on Fiverr for a professional who can design your slides in a more appealing way. In general, more photos , videos and less text is a good motto to live by.

CANVA SLIDES! Powerpoint itself is dry, Canva has allowed for so much engagement + vibrancy in the slides I've created. Low- cost, fun to make. Highly recommend. Don't be afraid to get colorful with it, a lot of "professionals" shy away from colors + emojis but that's what people connect with - and organizations are made of people. Creativity + professionalism together is the magic spot!

Emotions in public speaking carry as many risks as opportunities. It's probably fair to say things are quite similar in music: structure and composition are key, as well as understanding what kind of tonality, rhythm and intensity should be used where and why. Finally, just like in music, the importance of balance and proportion cannot be overstated. It's all too easy to overdo things and sound/be inauthentic on stage.

The smarter, more insightful your content, however, the slower the pace you can afford on stage. True charisma and public-speaking intelligence has little to do with fast-paced delivery, counterintuitive as it may sound.

Always remember that slides are an "aid" to your story. Engagement comes from the stories you tell and the way you deliver them. Frankly, slides are just a prompting technique. You do not want the audience so engrossed in your slides that they don't look at you or pay attention to what you are saying. Use powerful images to help the audience absorb your key messages. Always remember that you are the hero of the event, not your slides - they are there to help you and not the other way round!

I love using Mentimeter for word clouds and open ended questions /answers. You can also add in other live polling software that will allow attendees to vote while you are speaking. Another strategy is to show videos on mute while you talk. This is very effective for emphasizing specific content that is the focus of your talk. This definitely catches the eyes of the attendees and your words will resonate because there is no audio!

Creativity means taking risks and exploring things that haven’t been tried before. Inevitably, some of these ideas won’t work as well as others. Adapt those. The important aspect here is that these “failed” ideas lead you to new ideas that wouldn’t have emerged without the first ones. The more you try, the better your intuition for what works will become. But the safest way to kill creativity is to settle on the “safe way”.

Before you even start thinking about visuals, you should have a solid idea of what your key takeaways and objectives are. Only then should you ask yourself, what visuals will best support my message, if any at all? Not all presentations need visuals. Heck, some might do better with props or other people to physicalize your message, etc. Think outside the box. If, however, your presentation demands charts and graphs, then make sure these are well-designed and that you have practiced orienting your audience to what is important. Consider using scribbles and storyboards for ideation. The most common reason for lack of creativity I see is that people start their design process in PowerPoint. Which means that they are immediately restricted by PPT’s templates and the way the UI works. A much more creative way is to leave PPT shut, work on the story first and then go through it, argument for argument,?to ask yourself: What visual would make this particular aspect clearer? That way, you’ll know what to design and what the purpose of that slide is. It’ll lead you to both, more effective and more creative designs as your imagination is free to explore a much wider idea space, unrestricted by what PPT offers.

Some of my PowerPoint are 15 years old and the technology to create them has certainly grown. Now my delivery is always excellent, however, I recently engaged fiverr to take my original PowerPoint and bring it into 21st-century. It’s a very small investment to take my old, still effective, yet technologically behind, PowerPoint, And spark them up a bit.
