If our organization needs to develop a layoff strategy, I'll prioritize transparency and empathy throughout the process. I'll collaborate with leadership to assess the situation comprehensively and explore alternative solutions before implementing layoffs. When necessary, I'll communicate openly with affected employees, providing support services and resources to ease the transition. By approaching the process with sensitivity and integrity, we'll mitigate the impact on employees and maintain trust within the organization.

The most sensitive, also the unliking job in HR is perhaps to inform of layoff to the employees.. Such situtations require the HR to be absolutely humane in nature and need to assess priorities than ascertain emotions alone. While organisational sustenance is priority, I experienced governance of regulations is mere a tick mark excercise, the employees must be treated with utmost care & empathy. Options like any alternate role/change in location etc . . have to be completed exhausted before deciding on lay-off and more so, the deciding authority should be thorougly convinced of lay off only, as an option.

I have experienced, "role redundance" is one of the best mechanisms to draw up a list of people to layoff, than the "no need individuals" as excessive headcount may be transferred to, upskilled/reskilled as the need may be and fit in for alternative roles. Also, individual career stage, performance track should be used as major criteria for finalising the list. The least expected of HR in this regard, is to stand up and say NO to high salaried/age/health conditions/personal agenda/gender/regional discretion etc .. being the parameters. More often than not, companies play a game in the name of "Confidential", creating a terrifing and dismayed feeling in making up the list. Instead, should be clear, concice and transperant in its approach.

May be a serior person from HR and business Ops, being spoc for the entire episode, results in the process smoothening. An assurance of out-placement will be a great help to the employees.Some of the organisations have extended the most reqrired support like medical insurance, term insurance till the year end, gratuity payout even for less than 5 yrs of servcies etc. . will help the employees to stay afloat for some time.
