What do you do if your organization lacks a culture of innovation and creativity?

To cultivate an organization's culture, the first step is to be clear about the organization's core values and the people who you want to attract. The most effective leaders in the organization are ones who best emulate the core values and lead by example. For example if the organization values collaboration between teams, then the leaders could collaborate themselves in their vision and activities. If you want to encourage a certain culture, vision and action then as a leader, don't be afraid to authentically and regularly encourage, praise and recognize those who move and take action toward the desired culture.

One thing I have found helpful is to dig into the results of the assessment to truly understand what has driven the culture from what it was to what it is currently. One you understand the drivers of the change, this will help provide deeper insights into how these drivers have may have constrained innovation and creativity, and help identify appropriate actions to help drive cultural change and greater innovation and creativity.

If you were to tell me that an organization was lacking in culture, I’m not sure if I would even know what that means. It’s tough to define a vacuum. Rather, tell me what you want that you do not have now. Explain what your ideal work culture looks like. Visualize the culture you wish to see. Then you have a goal to aim for.

Use frameworks like the Innovation Culture Canvas. Empower your team to: ? Embrace a growth mindset. ? Develop new skills and competencies. ? Implement innovative processes and methods. The outcome? ? Enhanced customer experience. ? Improved employee engagement. ? Increased business success. It all starts with a vision.

A bold vision, a well-defined visualization of the vision, metrics to measure the achievement of milestones, and a final vision are absolute necessities. In thinking about the desired state, we will build a plan for evolving into an organization and teams that understand how they add up to the milestones and final vision. Each team must build their own Canvas understanding that the imminent nature of innovation in the future is collaboration and openness. Each team and the company need to inculcate and codify transparency, coachability, risk-tolerance, adaptability and continuous-learning into their 'way-of-work'.

As Collins & Porras noted in 1996 (HBR), the word "vision" is one of the most overused and least understood terms. Yet, the biggest challenge in defining the desired state is not to distinguish between what you want to change and what you want to keep. The biggest challenge is admitting that you don't know enough, neither about the future (this is clear to most people), nor about the present and the past. It is traditional to take the present as known and define scenarios to predict the future and choose the most promising one. If you want to be innovative, this approach could lead to failure. Instead, envision the desired future state, backcast to the present day and create a roadmap for your iterations towards the desired future.

How you engage your team each day in the culture change implementation process, determines the success of fostering a culture of innovation. In your journey to cultivate creativity within your organization, how regularly are you evaluating the effectiveness of your action plans? Are your innovation initiatives inclusive, providing opportunities for all employees to engage and contribute? What systems are in place to recognize and reward creative efforts, and are these systems truly motivating your team? How are you adapting your strategies to overcome new challenges that arise in fostering a culture of innovation?

Establish cross-functional teams to encourage collaboration across departments and disciplines. Stay agile and be prepared to adjust strategies as needed to ensure ongoing progress towards fostering a culture of innovation.

Apply the 80-20 rule: 80% of your innovation will come from 20% within each stakeholder group. Ensure talent is hired, partners onboarded and customers acquired to bring the ratio to that level. Make a new version of your Vision, a BOLD one. That which defines your idea of how the industry should look like 50 years from now. Start from the future and identify the innovations that have made the vision a reality. And then peel off each 5-years worth layer of innovations that led to the changed industry. Identify all the paths that technology could have taken from there. Continue the process till you reach the layer, 5 years from now, and identify the innovations that will lead you from the present to there.

I would say the implementation of an action plan is indeed first and foremost. . Firstly, it's essential to create an environment that encourages creative thinking and the sharing of ideas. This can be achieved by establishing clear definitions of innovation specific to the organization's goals and providing guidance and resources to support innovative initiatives. Engaging with employees to solicit their ideas and giving them the freedom to explore and create can significantly enhance the innovative output. Secondly, using structured frameworks such as innovation action plan templates can help in systematically identifying areas for improvement and developing a roadmap for implementing creative solutions.

Reading is fundamental. Leaders are readers but not all readers become leaders. This true statement by Harry S Truman is even more fundamental in today′s world where the hype of viralization makes people to forget about reading. The concept of the golden hour which is reading first thing in the morning is the rudder of the day. I would argue that those who do not follow it, they are not true mind innovators regardless of their position. They will defend their position but ,see, leadership is not positionship. Leadership is action and moving.

The shift from letter to spirit: Most organisations today have some or other initiatives targeted at imbibing & encouraging creativity which would lead to innovation. However, most such initiatives are executed in letter only and the spirit is missing. Quantifiable KRAs are measured and achieved but actual impact is nowhere close to what was envisaged. Organisations should consider how they can start building this mindset shift, and redesign the KRAs, to encourage their people to take these initiatives both in letter and spirit.

There are many who just talk about innovation. The path from "Talk" to "Action" is a long one for such folks. The opposite is also true. Those rare ones who show it to their team how it's done, who nudge in the right manner, who care. We learn from real inspiration and not "Copy Cat" phrases! Be that inspiration.

Being data-centric is a given, but being insight-driven and the insights being generated from a 'planned mining of data' from across your company and the industry is the way forward. Rejected ideas and failed solutions are a storehouse of futuristic innovation. AI can ensure that your innovation journey is not limited to board rooms or management meetings. Deploying a platform for the collection of ideas, solutions & opinions, micro-ideas on micro-challenges as part of larger projects, collating, and applying AI to suggest a comprehensive solution is one experiment being tried out in some client companies. The abstraction of the problems or challenges can help protect the knowledge and ensure complexity doesn't kill creativity.

In my 30 years of experience, there is nothing more valuable for making culture-shift stick than having leaders at all levels (everyone effected by this change) lead by example on the new strategy, priorities, focus, and values. A good vision at head office is not enough. It is your middle managers who are leading your entire employee base. Make them part of the solution if you want your new culture of innovation to take root and be sustainable.
