I have always believed that one can really reap the rewards of rational networking only when one doesn't restricts himself / herself to a certain bunch or cohort of people. If one really wishes to make the maximum out of networking, one must always be ready to expand his / her horizon beyond the rational realm and start collaborating with people from different and diverse backgrounds. This might appear to be insane at the beginning but gradually one finds some inherent common threads across people from different backgrounds, industries, and perspectives. And once the real worth has been discovered, such diverse network opportunities provide lot of gains in long term.

How do you want to create a network? In today's highly connected world, one of the elements we teach our Possiblist? Leaders to bring is "Conscious Choice". Consider how conscious you are when you're meeting people (virtually or in person). For example - when you're on (yet another!) meeting, do you google the people on that meeting invite? I connect with everyone I can ahead of a conference I'm speaking at for example with a simple message that creates a connection. Where could you be more 'conscious' without adding lots of time and effort to the work part of 'networking'?!

Often this is the disconnect and it can stymy the most diligent networking efforts.

If your networking is falling flat, look at where you’re going to network and look at self. Who are you wanting to add to your network? Are you in the right place to find those people? What is your approach? Are you an introvert, extrovert or omnivert? Are you making your presence known and does that attract who you are looking for. Talk with those who setup the event and ask for the whose who that will be there and see if they will Introduce you.
