1 Identify the problem

The first step to fix your storytelling problem is to identify what went wrong. Maybe your story was too long, too vague, too complex, or too irrelevant to your main point. Maybe your story lacked emotion, suspense, or humor. Maybe your story confused, bored, or offended your audience. Whatever the case, you need to be honest and objective about your feedback, and analyze what you could have done differently. You can also ask for constructive criticism from trusted peers, mentors, or coaches.

The speech isn't for you, it is for the audience. When telling a story consider the level of knowledge and background of the audience, are they a group of subject specialists or new to your topic? Write notes as soon as possible after the talk, when did you lose engagement, when did they not laugh when you thought they would, when did they laugh when you didn't expect that response? If you are recording & uploading the content, when are there negative spikes in viewing engagement, when does the audience vote with their feet or engagement focus? Once you pin point an area then try something new, that might work, or it might need changing again, but evolving the talk is the key to eventual success.

Recording your speeches and practicing in front of smaller audiences are great ways to improve your storytelling as well as your speaking performance as a whole. You can also ask fellow speakers to watch excerpts and give you feedback on how to improve (don't ask them to watch your full presentation, nobody has time for that since they are probably watching their own presentation to improve on that) and offer to return the favor to them.

2 Adjust your strategy

The next step is to adjust your strategy based on the problem you identified. For example, if your story was too long, you can shorten it by cutting out unnecessary details, or breaking it into smaller chunks. If your story was too vague, you can add more specifics and examples to make it more vivid and concrete. If your story was too complex, you can simplify it by using analogies, metaphors, or visuals. If your story was too irrelevant, you can link it to your main message by using transitions, summaries, or questions.

The more you practice, the more natural and authentic your story will sound.

Storytelling is ONE tool in your speaking arsenal. If your message isn't communicated well through storytelling, try using jokes, traditional motivational speeches (i.e. pumping them up), case studies, argumentation, etc. To tell the truth, storytelling is a powerful technique, so powerful that it is overrated. Storytelling is a tool, not the whole toolbox. Be careful not to fall for the trap of using storytelling for everything. Remember the old saying: To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
