The very first step is to figure out the reason. It could be - 1) Setting unrealistic goals 2) Also, the approach should be organised. It's difficult to progress by randomly watching videos or attending lectures. There should be a set curriculum to follow according to one's current level.

Why you are reading is far more significant that how you are reading. Thus, if there is no improvement or progress in the process, that is an indication of either studying to impress others or just reading to say I read it. If you can answer why you are reading and have credible reason to support that, precisely when it comes to linguistics, then figuring out a way to make it work would not be as painstaking as getting lost would be.
