It's critically important to design assessment strategies that align with your Learning Objectives for each lesson, unit and semester. By incorporating routine "low stakes" assignments with more intense tools such as exams and projects, students can scaffold knowledge and build confidence in so doing. A key component of this to be clear about the goals of each assessment. I remind my students - prior to an examination - of the learning outcomes we set forth in each class period of the unit. I find this helps them organize their study efforts and prioritize important concepts. It's important to make sure students understand your expectations - by providing rubrics or other scoring tools - you set students up to demonstrate needed skills.
